THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Mephistos Flea Song, Op. 75/3This is a Goethe setting from Faust. (Pronounced GER-ta if you bite into a lemon for the first syllable.) Berlioz set this poem memorably in his cantata The Damnation of Faust, as did Mussorgsky. Beethoven shows the humor in the poem and ends it with a touch of Italian opera a la Mozart.
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau with Gerald Moore on piano.
