Sowell: The Trump Card
Creators Syndicate ^ | August 4, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 08/03/2015 1:26:58 PM PDT by jazusamo

With Hillary Clinton's multiple misdeeds coming to light and causing her political problems, reflected in her declining support in the polls, both she and the Democratic Party have reason to be concerned. But both of them may yet be rescued by "The Donald," who can turn out to be their Trump card.

Donald Trump has virtually no chance of becoming even the Republican Party's candidate in 2016, much less being elected President of the United States.

The reason is not hard to understand: Republican voters simply do not trust him, as the polls show. Nor is there any reason why they should trust him, given his chameleon-like changes in the past.

Why then is he the "front-runner" in the polls?

One reason is arithmetic. When there is a small army of Republican candidates, each with a tiny set of supporters, anyone with enough name recognition to get the support of a fifth or a fourth of the Republicans polled stands out, even if twice that many Republicans say they would never vote for him.

When both kinds of Republicans are counted, Donald Trump is both the "front-runner" and the leading pariah. The danger is not that he will get the nomination, but that his irresponsible talk will become the image of the Republican Party, and that his bombast will drown out more sober voices that need to be heard, thereby making it harder to select the best candidate.

More is involved than arithmetic, however. Many Republican voters are so disgusted with their party, especially over its repeated betrayals of them, and of the country, especially when it comes to immigration, that they are immediately attracted to anyone who voices the outrage they feel.

“We have become too delicate to hear the truth. Even Republicans are becoming too emotional and sensitive, hence the phenomenon of the serial apologizers. “

How about ‘The bombing begins in 5 minutes.’ I don’t think he ever apologized for it either.

Back when men were men....

Seriously, if we ever needed a Third Party we need one now.

You may remember the tree of liberty has to be watered from time to time, with the blood of patriots. Freedom is both won and kept by wars and risk.

If you people fear and tremble over a risk, I dare say you will have a problem with a revolution.

There will be no more compromising and hand wringing over the treacherous Republican Party playing us again. Trump is the EXACT man to lead a Third Party and make it increasingly viable.

“There is no way I could vote for him based on his past support for gun-control, abortion, Obama support, immigration support,”

That means you couldn’t vote for Walker, Rubio, Bush - heck, all except Cruz - because there were all pro-amnesty.

“Trump wasn’t for border control before. His latest statement still has a road to amnesty.”

Ditto for Walker, Rubio, Bush - all but Cruz.

Many of us are willing. Enough to cause a lot of trouble for the wobbly around here and the Establishment who lures them to the play pen, election after election.

“leading the conservative wing of the Republican party down the road to irrelevance.”

What conservative wing? Conservatives get vilified by the GOP.

The GOP is making itself irrelevant by becoming PC, liberal, and cowardly.

“Anyone callow enough to believe a person spouting what they want to hear, who is documented to hold positions diametrically opposite to what he’s saying now.”

That’s why I don’t believe Walker’s election eve conversion about amnesty.

The only one who has been consistent is Cruz.

But Trump is putting the dialogue in the right direction. Without him, illegals wouldn’t even be topic, other than how quickly to amnesty them.

“If you people fear and tremble over a risk, I dare say you will have a problem with a revolution.”

We went Galt and are waiting for exactly that.

Nobody can make the drastic changes needed within the confines of our current government. Our only hope is a complete reset.

That was just a joke, wasn’t it? By Reagan? Then there was a lot of drama afterward. He was doing a mic check before the broadcast and he altered the last part of the sentence.

Of course Russia was mad. But I am sure down deep they knew it was just a joke. They had to use it because that was the dynamic of the relationship back then. It is precisely why Reagan chose it as his humor subject. It was not actually broadcast. But the media hyped it up anyway.

The battle between truth and error has always been a struggle, a fight. But emotionalism is on the rise with the rise of liberalism. It is pathetic. The battle for what is true and right gets harder and harder because of the firewall of emotionalism. “You hurt my feelings when you say that..” stops the right side from even being heard much of the time.

Read a story yesterday about how some of his advisers wanted him to take a loss on property when the RE .market turned south. Told him he needed the cash. Instead he picked up the phone, called the royalty in some ME.country and sold it for 4x what he had in it.

“The battle for what is true and right gets harder and harder because of the firewall of emotionalism. “

Well put! We have become a schoolyard of little girls. And the little boys are not allowed to duke it out, so they never learn how.

Yes, it was a ‘joke’, during a mic test - but given the tensions between us and the USSR, they had to wonder!

(And I’m female and am disgusted at how emasculated this country has become!)

I don’t think Trump and Perot are the same. Perot never took on the media. Trump has.

YES!! I saw it this morning on Morning Joe! I heard Mika screaming with disbelief, laid my tea towel down and whirled around to see what all the excitement was about.

THAT was IT! OMGosh! It was unbelievable! Haven’t seen it since though!

Larry said, “That’s how you get the advantage isn’t it.” Something to that effect.

Trump blows my mind!

This looking like another one of those events where conservatives picks sides and destroy each other with essentially no one left standing...

From my view Trump has never been a conservative. But he knows how to play the situation to get what he wants. He picked the Republican flag and is going to run with it until it isn't operable anymore. Then he'll run with whatever gets him where he wants to go. Ideology isn't the guide. Sealing the deal is his guide.

He also knows people are starving for someone who will stand up to the political elite who run roughshod over our lives. And he's providing that.
