Slate Makes Great Case in Favor of Right to Bear Arms

An online magazine has made a terrific case in favor of the right to bear arms. Was it an NRA publication? Nope. Perhaps one of the conservative magazines such as National Review or American Spectator? Nope. The magazine was actually Slate. Slate? Yes, liberal Slate magazine has published an article making one of the strongest cases in favor of the right of citizens to bear arms that I have seen in a long time.

The strong defense of the Second Amendment came in a speculative Slate article about what would have happened if Germany had attempted to invade the United States during World War II. Author John Mixon correctly pointed out that this would have been an incredibly bad idea. Among the reasons he listed were the fact that Germany had no forward bases in North America from which to launch such an invasion. Also the German supply lines would have been ridiculously long and could easily be cut off. On top of that, the Wehrmacht was already tied down battling on the Eastern Front. However, the final reason that Mixon gives for why such an attempted German invasion would have failed miserably is one that is sure to upset liberals in a big way:

You can be forgiven for doubting the veracity of this title but it's TRUE! The Slate proofreader must have been asleep at the wheel when allowing this to be published.

“You can not invade America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.” Attributed to Admiral Yamamoto.

The liberals know this full well, and know that if relates to Marxists as much as Germans. That’s why they are desperate to take our guns away.

How then shall we perform it?--At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it?-- Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never!--All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

< P> Abramam Lincoln, 1838.

'...a rifle behind every blade of grass.”

Many years ago I did some support/counceling for prisoners. At a site occupied mostly with manslaughter & other violent crime inmates I commented on the apparent lack of security (compared to other places I'd been). One of the guys walked me out near the gate (honest), pointed toward a small clump of houses and said...

"Behind every one of those doors is a red neck with a shotgun".

The bottom line of Lincoln's Lyceium quote I posted above.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

It seems that suicide is what we are doing now. In Lincoln's time the sectional differences were the threat. Today, it really is takers vs payers.

The only way for the Germans to have a semi-reasonable chance of a successful attack on mainland U.S. would be to establish a forward base somewhere in the Caribbean. That would be an exceptionally arduous task even if Hitler had managed to defeat both Britain and the Soviet Union. Even then that would have left many of Britain's commonwealth countries (Canada, Australia, India) still in the fight.

The size and topography of the U.S. would be a tremendous obstacle to overcome. Germany simply didn't have the manpower or resources for the task. If Hitler had committed the millions of German soldiers, sailors, and airmen not already dead or crippled to an invasion of the U.S., he would have little left to defend against the American invasion of Europe that would be sure to come.

In the end, Hitler's outstretched armies would be cut off and annihilated. Even without Britain or the Russkies, the rest of the Allies would have too much men and materiel.

It would not be wise to attack this “Nation of Snipers”.

Congratulations for publishing this article, Slate. It is highly deserving of a Second Amendment award.

NRA should give Slate such an award and publicize it a lot. It would embarrass Slate and get them a lot of carping from their readership.

“The Man in the High Castle” is a very good book, though.
