CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- It took almost three years for the case to reach trial. That trial played out over the course of three months. The jury needed just 6.5 hours to render a verdict. James Holmes has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

In practice the death sentence is essentially LWOP.

From the raw numbers, it looks like the chances of dying of natural causes on death row are higher than of being executed.

"As of April 1, 2015, there were 3,002 death row inmates in the United States".

There were 35 executions in the US in 2014, the shortest time between sentencing and execution was 8 years.

Commutation of sentence by the President, sometimes a Governor, finding of trial error by subsequent court action and the order of a new trial, group release to relieve overcrowding ordered by a legislature, legislative change to end life without parole as in many other countries, and whatever else might come along as long as the prisoner lives.

The Supermax in Colorado is a Federal prison. This guy will be sent to a state prison.

He won’t be sent to any supermax at all, unless he really starts acting up in prison.
