“Paul was absolutely right in the debate with Christie on surveillance ...”

I don’t support either one of them, but hat’s not how I evaluated that exchange. Here is the relevant portion of the transcript:

“I want to collect more records from terrorists but less records from innocent Americans,” said Paul, the Senate’s most prominent libertarian.

That’s a “completely ridiculously answer,” responded Christie, a former U.S. attorney who pursued cases using powers under the Patriot Act. “How are you supposed to know?”

You’re not allowed to know by storing and monitoring all Americans’ communications like the Stasi in east Germany.
