RIO DE JANEIRO Thirteen rowers on the 40-member U.S. team came down with stomach illness at the World Junior Rowing Championships a trial run for next summers Olympics and the team doctor said she suspected it was due to pollution in the lake where the competition took place.
The event took place amid rising concerns about the water quality at venues for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, now less than a year away.
The Americans were by far the hardest hit at the regatta that concluded over the weekend, with reports of vomiting and diarrhea. Other teams in the competition reported some illnesses, according to World Rowing, the sports governing body, but those were about as expected at an event that featured more than 500 young rowers.
On July 30, The Associated Press published an independent analysis of water quality that showed high levels of viruses and, in some cases, bacteria from human sewage in all of Rios Olympic and Paralympic water venues, including the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, where the rowing competition took place.

same problem at barcelona. They had to do major cleanup for the sailing venue. The initial boats had poop all over them. like the raritan bay in the 80’s The nice name is fecal chloroform.
We in Cleveland just start our river on fire!!
Stroke! Braaap!
lol
Welcome to the Turd World!
It’s global warming.
Swim in fecal water...ingest fecal bacteria. Note to self: cancel “swimming” vacation to Brazil.
Why did more Americans get sick? Simple as we have the cleanest lakes, rivers and oceans in the world. So, US athletes have not been exposed to all of the germs other country’s athletes have been exposed to. Those foreign athletes have built up natural immunities due to their exposure.
That’s why I think we see more food allergies and kids getting sick these days. Parents don’t let their kids get enough exposure to germs, they make them live in virtual plastic bubbles. So the immune systems never fully develop.
Do it again a couple of times....our guys will be immune...if they don’t die.
Human sewage? You first.
Trash is flammable. Your MLB team is on fire these days, eh?
LOL! Actually, I hail from MN, so even the twinkies are a bit behind. :-) But my wife supports the local team. SUCKER! :-)
