Donald Trump calls out Mark Zuckerberg on immigration

Donald Trump has a new target for his criticism of the nation's immigration policies - Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg is one of the leading tech executives who has called for a more open immigration policy. Specifically, he wants to make more H-1B visas available to tech employers so they can hire foreign skilled workers.

Trump said he wants to require employers to pay H-1B workers much more money, which he said would discourage companies from hiring them and boost job prospects for Americans. He also wants to have tech jobs offered to unemployed Americans before they can be filled by workers with H-1B visas.

"This will improve the number of black, Hispanic and female workers in Silicon Valley who have been passed over in favor of the H-1B program. Mark Zuckerberg's personal Senator, Marco Rubio, has a bill to triple H-1Bs that would decimate women and minorities," Trump wrote in his immigration plan. Rubio is also seeking the Republican nomination for president.

Zuckerberg started a public interest group called Fwd.us to push for immigration and lobbying reform along with Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer. Neither Facebook (FB, Tech30) nor Fwd.us had an immediate comment on Trump's criticism of Zuckerberg.

Trump says that there are plenty of graduates with degrees in science, technology, engineering and math, known as STEM, to fill tech jobs. That means that employers don't need H-1B visas to fill jobs, and are using them instead to keep wages low.

He’s going to rebuild the Reagan coalition.

And regain America at the same time as the “ land of the free from government dependance, and the Home of the Brave who finally stood up against all the backstabbing, backscratchers...”

Go Donald

That’s a good one.

Amen!!!

Tech salaries have been basically frozen since the 1990’s. In the old days, tech salaries rivaled the golf clubbing executives of many corporations.

“MANY Democrats will cross over to vote for Trump. Blacks are facing 50% unemployment. Unions are getting destroyed by bad foreign deals. 93 million adults not in the workforce.”

So how is Trump not espousing Democrat policy?

True story. My daughter was close friends with a couple from high school who became sweethearts and eventually married. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon, one of the top IT universities in the country which she graduated from University of Pittsburgh in something more commonplace.

She got a job right away in the Pittsburgh area. The best he could do was an IT job on the other side of the state, roughly a four hour commute each way. So he commuted home to his wife on weekends and holidays for about two years.

There wasn't a lack of IT jobs in the Pittsburgh area; just a lack of willingness of area employers to hire Americans. They actually had seminars telling the employers how not to hire Americans. Finally, someone posed as an IT corporate employer, paid to attend one of these seminars and secretly took a video, which was posed on You-Tube and went viral. Don't know if it is still there, but it caused enough of an uproar, that one of the many IT places to which this young man had applied in the Pittsburgh area finally called and offered him a job.

He isn’t an isolationist. I personally prefer clothing be made in Mexico rather than China, India or somewhere off continent.

Good jobs in Mexico, might keep many from crossing over our border.

IT workers don’t want to work textile sowing machines, anyway.

Here is a 2007 news clip from Lou Dobbs which covers just some of this in five minutes. And, no, it hasn't gotten any better. It was just that Bush was in office at the time and CNN thought airing the story would make the administration look bad.

The low-cost non-citizen employee is also especially popular in universities and colleges. Take a look at the makeup of the faculty and ask yourself why there are so few US-born professors. Long ago, US citizens decided to avoid academic careers because of pervasive discrimination and, now, the low-balling of salaries which can be done because of the supply of non-citizen labor. Most colleges now have a visa specialist in the HR office just for this purpose.

The wealthiest Americans need obedient, low wage labor......yeah. Got it.

I agree. But that is not consistent with Trump's positions on trade--he has stated that he wants to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. from places like Mexico (and also China, etc.), through the use of import tariffs.

You know, if they *really* wanted to expose the hypocrisy of H1B visas, they should have a change of heart overnight and agree that we need more on one condition ... once a person is admitted to work in the USA on an H1B visa, they are free to seek employment elsewhere if another company finds the person’s talents worth more than what their current “sponsor” is paying. I’d like to see Facebook and the like weasel their way out of that caveat.
