He is seeking justification for his cowardice.
Not sure he is a coward, just un-trained and ill prepared for reality. Many of us who express our resolve are not likely armed at his very moment- are you? ( I am, my sidearm at hand while I have my coffee and read the news....)
I would like to see a follow-up 12 months from now- I’d bet a good steak that the couple will have rethought their lives a bit and now that he is disabled will have obtained both training and arms appropriate to the task at hand-living peacefully among the heathen.
He has too much to lose to keep his head in the sand.
