Not much. The economics of the City were sustained by other companies. The city still grew.

Then the demographics changed and "workers" moved to the suburbs. Population has decreased substantially.

That leaves the poor and elderly. It became a welfare city....and that's where it remains.

The wealthier Rochester folks live in the suburbs but "own" Rochester.

Rochester is all about politics.

HS graduation rate...less than 50%.
For 2010 ...

• New York City: 64.2 percent
• Buffalo: 52.8 percent
• Syracuse: 51.1 percent
• Rochester: 43.4 percent

I was born and raised in the NYC area. Just weeks before the riots, my family moved here (I was still in HS) ironically, to get away from the crime and violence.
This was my mother's home town, with history going back to the 1880s.
After the riots, and after the first couple of winters here, I swore I wouldn't live in Rochester.
Fifty one years later ... still here.

great school...lots of $ - and the teaching hospital next door is great - they just built a ton of student housing above a new street of shoppes...directly north about a 1/2 mile is the “city”..it does get sketchy - but overall not a bad area if you have your wits about you - I frequent a local ghettoesque wing place...have never had a problem...Im thinkin the doe eyed school kid was an easy mark. In between the school and the city lies Mt Hope Cemetery...Susan B Anthony is buried there along with the suspected Jack the Ripper and Buffalo Bills child...neat place

Irondequoit mall part deux.
When I lived on LI I was used to eating Nathan's hots, bagels, egg creams and pastrami sandwiches. All to die for.
We moved up here and found funny looking white hots. Meh.

Some liberal friends (Sanders supporters now) lived in a mostly-white wedge between Rochester and Irondequoit, lost $45,000 in equity over a period of ten years or so, unloaded the house, moved to a close-in, low-end suburb, and I expect they'll be selling (at a loss) and moving in a few more years, after their kids are out of high school. Having Kodak crater didn't help real estate values, either.
