With each passing day, Texans are another step closer to enjoying one of their favorite treats. Blue Bell Creameries is expected to have ice cream back on some store shelves by the end of the month, and on Monday the company will reveal the first flavor customers can expect.
Blue Bell recalled all of its ice cream products and halted production earlier this summer after listeria contamination. Blue Bell will return to store shelves in 15 states through a five-phase distribution plan. Up first, ice cream produced at the company's Sylacauga, Alabama facility, will first hit store shelves in Brenham, Houston and Austin, along with Birmingham and Montgomery, Alabama.
Blue Bell Returns to Some Store Freezers on Aug. 31 Dallas-Fort Worth and southern Oklahoma are part of the second phase of distribution and will have to wait a little while longer -- the company has not said when Phase 2 distribution will begin. According to Blue Bell, its Alabama production facility began producing ice cream in late July. The facilities in Brenham and Broken Arrow, Oklahoma are still undergoing facility and production upgrades and are not yet producing products.
Homemade Vanilla Matters
Born in MA, here. I grew up on “Hoodsies”.
They use high fructose corn syrup?
Moved to Texas in 2008 from the Pacific Northwest. Tillamook Ice Cream is better.
Best vanilla in a 1.5 QT to 1/2 gallon carton: Costco’s Kirkland brand “Super Premium Vanilla”. 50% more butterfat than Blue Bell.
They are starting with plain vanilla and chocolate first. Our local Kroger and Randall’s stores will have it first on August 31. I can guarantee you that people around here will be waiting in line for the delivery truck to appear. They are talking about maybe limiting the quantity you can purchase at one time for a little while until production is back to normal. Our family will be in that line and buy as much as we can!
Well, I’ll put in a plug for Petaluma Cooperative Creamery in Petaluma, CA. (Petaluma is dairy country).
They don’t distribute it so you have to buy it at their facility in Petaluma, but it’s the best I’ve ever had! Top flavors with me: Meyer Lemon and Lavender.
Best stuff I’ve ever had in all my worldly travels, first world, second world, third, you name it :)
I’ve seen the lame get up and walk across the room for another bowl of the Mardi Gras King Cake flavor...
Bless their hearts...I feel for them
Americas best large ice cream brand suffered a silver bullet
I’ll buy some
Key is getting the chains on board
It’s the best of the big company tub ice cream
No question
There are better boutique labels like Graeters or that new Swiss one....Movenpick
But Blue Bell is damned good.....
It’s so good, that when I received the recall notice on the two half-gallon tubs in my freezer, with its description of the sometimes fatal listeria bacteria, to be replaced by nothing but cold cash, I proceeded to EAT them.
Probably not in before the comments about every ice cream besides Blue Bell and how bad Blue Bell sucks.
WB Bluebell, you will roar back greater than ever.
Love Blue Bell - It’s also sold in MS. Good quality and doesn’t leave a homo aftertaste like Ben and Jerry’s is reported to do....
Ridiculous. [And I was here 30 years ago eating Blue Bell, so I am qualified to say this.]
Blue Bell is pretty good but it ain’t Braums.
Dunno. I think it was more that they cut back on the cream and the quality of their chunky stuff. They first became a big hit because they were the first to come out with a variety of flavors so everyone flocked to them even though it was much more expensive than other brands. Stores and restaurants would put signs in the windows that they had Blue Bell. If you served Blue Bell a home, you were the big shots in the neighborhood. But somewhere along the way, they changed the recipe. It wasn't as creamy, the flavors weren't as bold tasting and the price was still high. I used to ask for Blue Bell Tin Roof for my birthday but they cut back on the chunky stuff and the vanilla had no flavor. Their Rocky Road became lighter colored so it was obvious they'd cut back on the cocoa. Other brands like Breyers and Blue Bunny came along and they had exciting flavors, too but were also on the expensive side. We eventually just went with the cheaper store brand and added our own toppings or made homemade. I hadn't had any butter pecan flavored in 6-8+ years because Blue Bell's was gritty and the pecans were bitter like they were old and rancid even though Texas is pecan country. Two weeks ago, hubby, who can't have sugar now, brought in some Blue Bunny Butter Pecan and insisted I try it. Ahhhh ahhh, angels' sang! That stuff tastes almost like I remember it should but it's the one with half the fat and Splenda as the sweetener. So, who knows about sugar vs. Splenda vs. high fructose corn syrup.
