Right. No outrage about sex trafficking, beheadings, brutality against children? Just gays? Wow!

At a birthday party this weekend, a series of questions by kids on history led to someone pointing out that we had slavery 150 years ago, which is why some people are in bad situations now. I asked the kids, “Who here knows that ISIS in Iraq and Syria has slaves today? That they attacked a bunch of Yazidi non-Muslims last year and made them slaves?”

Aside from my son, no one knew that.

“Why are we saying some people are bad today for slaves 150 years ago? If we want to make up for slavery, why aren’t we talking about freeing slaves today? And does anyone remember save our girls hash tag last year?” Couple of hands went up. “That was because Boko Haram, black Africans, took black Christian girls slaves. They were sold to men as wives or slaves to do work. That’s slavery today. If you want to talk about rights and wrongs of black slavery, let’s talk about THAT, not stuff no one here every did or suffered from. I want to free the slaves, but today, that’s freeing slaves from the evils of Islam, not what we fought over in the Civil War.”

I had one parent privately criticize me for calling Islam evil, but no one else was even aware of the topic or cared.

I hate how we’re browbeaten on black oppression 50 years ago to justify discrimination against whites today, but no one talks about slavery in Islam of women, non-Muslims and darker skinned people (think Phillipeno maids in Saudi Arabia, ISIS generating complaints that dark skinned people are sent to clean toilets while lighter ones get prestigious suicide missions).
