A group of black women from a book club were kicked off a wine tour in Napa at the weekend - sparking accusations of racism on the company's part. One of the women, Lisa Johnson, said it was 'humiliating' when she and her friends were escorted off the Napa Valley Wine Train by a police officer. The company said the women had been spoken to several times by the train manager after complaints from other customers that they were laughing and talking too loudly. But one passenger who witnessed the incident later claimed that it was clearly racially motivated.
The Napa Valley Wine Train offers a 'three-hour journey through world famous vineyards: wine tours, wine tasting & great dining'. The women - who all wore matching T-shirts with their book club's slogan, 'Sistahs on the Reading Edge' - departed on the train on Saturday shortly before noon. They admit that they were laughing and talking with one another as they enjoyed their wine. At one point, a fellow passenger told the ladies - including an 83-year-old grandmother - 'this isn’t a bar', while a manager said they needed to quiet down.
Johnson said no one was 'intoxicated' but that a few of the ladies were 'rambunctious' at times, which most passengers did not seem to mind as they chatted with the women and snapped photos.

That being said, if nothing else, grab a glass and go sit with them. One of two things would have happened, you'd have either joined in their laughter or they would have piped down.

I cannot go to a movie theater anymore in Memphis. Manner-less in your face rudeness is the reason. Cell phones, texting, talking, and making a general spectacle of themselves is the black experience here. And yes I think they do it on purpose. The culture will not carry out a subdued or quiet conversation.
I would like to see videos. Surely someone videoed the event.

I suspect that some will argue that there are no “standards” for behaviour in public, only cultural norms. And that to apply the norms for white middle class people for behaviour in public to those of other ethnic communities and/or socioeconomic groups is inherently discriminatory.
Not saying that I agree with that, but some will certainly argue that way. I would say that as a business the people operating this wine tour train are entitled to have their own standards for behaviour such that some guests aren’t disturbing the enjoyment of other guests. I seriously doubt if having paying customers, particularly black ones (everyone being mindful of racial matters), removed from the train is something that they enjoy having to do.

The volume thing appears to me to be pretty much cultural. Have you ever walked behind a group of black women in a mall? You’d think they were all hard of hearing. Maybe they are. I don’t understand it, but it’s a phenomena I’ve noticed for years.
Standards are cultural norms. Which is why they are pushing against the cultural norms. Norms must be revised and whites must be made to submit.
Blacks tend to get pretty loud when you get a whole pack of them together.
