Trump is whatever Trump needs to be to promote his brand. Right now he is refashioning his brand as a Republican presidential candidate. This requires him shift positions to fit that mold. It's why his positions are so disjointed when actually called to explain stuff. He hasn't actually thought these things out because he isn't an ideological conservative. He is not grounded in conservative thought.
He's acts mad, repeats a few platitudes over and over again and throws red meat out to the base. Never mind that he may not be sincere about any of it - which his history suggests is likely the case.
I could understand some people giving him a look. Heck, I agree with much of what he has said about immigration. But the degree to which many supposed conservatives have become fanatical Trumpkins, as if this is all some sort of cult of personality, despite Trump's lack of conservative history (quite the opposite actually as he's just as often been a Dem/liberal) is disturbing to watch. It makes me realize how easy a clownish populist can fool a heck of a lot of otherwise learned people. We've seen that through history, and this is a reminder that it can always happen again.
