I was thinking he had become accustomed to being obeyed, and did not really know how to deal with the fact that someone had told him "no."

That is what I meant when I said that he had forgotten how to be an ordinary citizen. You can't behave like that when you're an average schmoe.

He’s been retired for over 28 years. He offered to pay with a check or debit card. He should be charged, with a suspended verdict for one year, assuming he stays out of trouble for at least a year.
