Donald Trump- A 21st Century Protectionist Herbert Hoover
Newsmax ^ | Friday, 28 Aug 2015 07:28 PM | Lawrence Kudlow

Posted on 08/30/2015 6:00:11 AM PDT by GeronL

Here's a historical fact that Donald Trump, and many voters attracted to him, may not know: The last American president who was a trade protectionist was Republican Herbert Hoover.

Obviously that economic strategy didn't turn out so well — either for the nation or the GOP.

Does Trump aspire to be a 21st century Hoover with a modernized platform of the 1930 Smoot-Hawley tariff that helped send the U.S. and world economy into a decade-long depression and a collapse of the banking system?

We can't help wondering whether the panic in world financial markets is in part a result of the Trump assault on free trade.

Trump is also now running full throttle on an anti-immigration platform that could hurt growth as well and alienate Republicans from ethnic voters that the GOP needs if it is going to win in 2016.

We call this the Trump Fortress America platform. He clearly sees international trade and immigration as a negative sum game for American workers.

He recently announced that as president he would prohibit American companies like Ford from building plants in Mexico. He moans pessimistically that "China is eating our lunch" and is "sucking the blood out of the U.S.?"

But strategic tax cuts and regulatory relief after the anti-business rule-making assault by Obama, not trade and immigration barriers, are the solution to America's competitiveness deficit.

A draft of Trump's 14-point economic manifesto promises that, as president, he would "modify or cancel any business, or trade agreement that hinders American business development, or is shown to create an unfair trading relationship with a foreign entity."

I see you are on Obama’s, Hillary and Jeb Bush’s side on this....

Actually ma'am, you're not enlightened at all. You're totally 180 degrees wrong. I am with Reagan, Sowell, Williams, Friedman and Hayek.....you are with Bernie Sanders and Richard Trumpka and Hillary and most of the time, Obama. (he's been all over the place on it). You have one deeply held liberal economic belief, but you are unwilling to see it or admit it. It's fine. Just admit you're a liberal on trade.

who sounds more like Reagan....Trump or Kudlow? I mean, we’ve been told ad nauseum that Trump is Reagan....

And the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.

Baloney. The panic in the markets is due to the Federal Reserve saying they might raise interest rates. All the blame put on China is bogus. Where in the Constitution does it say that we can form a Central Bank?

The Chamber has many big supporters of tariffs, just like the union thugs do too. BUT I wouldn’t expect you to know that, but the tariff express is also part of the Chamber train. Damn, reality is tough when you’re intellectually inconsistent, ain’t it? Sorry to break it to you.

We led the world for over 50 years after World War II WITH TARIFFS.

Furthermore, how is it fair that the United States STILL PAYS TARIFFS TO CHINA AND MEXICO, but they do not pay them to us?

We are about to economically collapse after these RIGGED trade agreements.

Overall the United States was stronger 50 plus years after World War II WITH TARIFFS. Than it is today with the RIGGED TRADE AGREEMENTS you like where the United States gets royally screwed.

I agree with you on post 51- including the good parts of what Trump is doing.

It’s his childish inconsistent back peddling and emotional bots that irk me - far more than Trump himself.

Kudlow is blowing smoke. While he preaches free trade, he gives only passing lip service to fair trade. The problem we have is fair trade and that is what Trump is talking about. This country is being taken to the cleaners and Trump speaks to the incredible imbalance in world trade. Rather than slap on tariffs and call the job done, he will use tariffs as leverage to negotiate fair trade agreements with foreign countries. There are other options to leverage against these countries. America spends billions of dollars on foreign aid to countries that are screwing us on trade, yet the U.S. will not use this leverage effectively in trade negotiations and on immigration. Mexico is is a prime example of this. Kudlow is a mouthpiece for the Chamber of Commerce on trade and immigration. He is basically for the status quo, which the country is sick to death of.

I don’t care, Larry. I’ll vote for Hillary before Jeb. And if enough conservatives promise to do likewise, maybe we won’t get Jeb as our nominee.

Ok, I’ve decided with others that this is my last comment to you. You appear to have Tourette’s Syndrome and cannot discuss calmly your dislike of Trump without resorting to foolish insults that turn people off whatever point you are making.

Be gone before someone drops a house on you!

The guy just suggested his pro-abort extremist sister should be on SCOTUS

Could you please provide a link that has him stating his sister should be on SCOTUS? Thanks.

But dude....two things you seem to not understand.

One thing I DO understand is when a theoretician has to misidentify critical factors in any equation, it's because correct identification will not yield the answer he wants.

As for your two points...

On the first, I agree with you on the theoretical level. However, two points are relevant here. First, Trump's priority was to keep these companies domestic. Second, when the regulatory environment imposed by government is relevant to a company's ability to compete in a global market, I have no problem with said government reliving some of those regulatory burdens.

That it took the form of a bailout merely indicates the government's attempt to provide aid while maintaining the status quo.

As to your second points, hindsight does not invalidate the raison d'etre for the original proposition.

First why are you addressing Ma’am? What indication did I give you that I am female or is it because you can’t answer the questions I asked you? Thus, you are unleashing a personal attack.

Your only illogical defense is you are with Reagan. No your not because Reagan was not a Crony Capitalist. You are in 180 degrees disagreement.

How do you think Reagan was able to get Japan and European car companies to build their plants here?

So fare you have not been able to answer one of my questions.

Trump’s own words don’t even matter to his supporters.

And apparently pointing out his own words and own positions is "TDS"
