House Speaker John Boehner said he is "deeply disappointed" in President Obama's plan to rename Alaska's Mount McKinley "Mt. Denali," joining a chorus of Republican lawmakers, even though the change has roots in the Republican Party.
The peak, which is the tallest in North America, was named after the nation's 25th president and former Ohio governor, William McKinley, in 1896.
Boehner, from Ohio, joined other lawmakers from his state in condemning the move, which Obama announced Sunday.
"There is a reason President McKinley's name has served atop the highest peak in North America for more than 100 years, and that is because it is a testament to his great legacy," Boehner said in a statement Monday. "McKinley served our country with distinction during the Civil War as a member of the Army. He made a difference for his constituents and his state as a member of the House of Representatives and as governor of the great state of Ohio. And he led this nation to prosperity and victory in the Spanish-American War as the 25th president of the United States. I'm deeply disappointed in this decision."

Obama & the totalitarian Left understands power; and has a willingness to exercise power illegally. Boehner does not understand power, and while he misuses his position to bully more honorable men, continues to retreat on the real issues--totally surrendering situation, after situation, where he really had the upper hand.
Harrumph! Harrumph!
So this is what awakes Boehner from his slumber.
I could care less about the name of this mountain (and I’m sure many will continue to refer to it as “McKinley”), and there certainly are many other things with which Boehner should be more concerned, but this is just another part of undoing the WASP legacy of this country. Old white guys’ names will be removed from everything (including our money); assimilation has completely failed (in case anyone hasn’t noticed).
This is a non starter... and frankly a matter of whatever you say I’m against it...
Seems the state of Alaska never cared for the name and has wanted it changed for a good while...so while I dislike Obama... this is just stupid. The mountain had no direct tie to the guy it has been named for.
There are bigger fish to fry... if Alaska wants its mountain named after a Government Motors SUV... so be it.
So I told everyone you're going to get a very stern letter from me because you change Mckinley's name. You're not mad at me are you? Are we still on for golf on Saturday, or was it Sunday? Can I have another drink.
It’ll always be Mt. McKinley to me — and to all right-thinking Americans.
This was just another in a long string of very strange actions taken by the Kenyan Usurper. It could be easily undone by President Trump.
Agreed, this whole thing is a non starter.. Alaskans have been petitioning to change the name for decades, and not some rabble rousing small sect, but the even the Republican congress folks have petitioned for the name change in the past...
McKinley had no direct tie to the mountain and this is a stupid fight... The only reason anyone cares is because its OBama doing it... and its wasted energy, lets focus on more important things..
A McKinley supporter in 1896 was the one who named it, informally. Later it was named officially along with a national park, in 1917.
I wonder what Boner thinks about the reduction of the military at a time when the threats are increasing?
I haven’t heard him speak out on this minor matter.
Boner: You should be working on something else. Not wasting time on names.
There are hundreds (if not thousands) of place names in this country that are derived directly or indirectly from Indian names.
One more or one less makes no difference whatsoever.

But noooo, he wants to fight 0bama over a map label.
I don’t care about this mountains name. However, if Zero gets way with this he now has another “executive authority” he can use to rename anything he wants to. Maybe Washington DC will be renamed Obama City, District of Obama. He could even rename the United States if he wanted to.
Don’t give one more inch.
what the GD heck????
Why on earth is this necessary?
DOES THAT MORON HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO CHANGE MAPS AND BOOKS AND EVERYTHING ELSE ?
” Barky’s House “Whitey”.
LOL good one.
I agree
What was wrong with letting folks call it either name
I piss down the throat of the politically correct unless their stomachs on fire
****”Leave it to McBoner to take a firm stand on something irrelevant.”*****
There wasn’t any money it for him
Does anyone out there know the extent to which statutory authority is needed to make this change stick?
