Pope Francis will give all priests discretion during the Roman Catholic Church's upcoming Holy Year to formally forgive women who have had abortions, in the Argentine pontiff's latest move towards a more open and inclusive church.
In Church teaching, abortion is such a grave sin that those who procure or perform it incur an automatic excommunication. Usually only designated clergy and missionaries can formally forgive abortions.
But from Dec.8 to Nov. 26, during an extraordinary Holy Year or "Jubilee" on the theme of mercy announced by Pope Francis in March, all priests will be able to do so, he said in a letter published on Tuesday by the Vatican.

Wait, the Pope can forgive sin? The Pope can confer the ability to forgive sin to others? Huh, I guess then Christ died for nothing because a man can forgive the sins of another man. Who knew?
In Catholicism, a priest can forgive anyone a sin. They must atone for that sin and in the case of murder, must turn themselves into the police.
This is why “atheist Bill Maher” is on the pope’s “side” and Catholic Santorum is not.
Whatever is he thinking. Abortion is a well thought out decision. It's murder.

Only God can forgive sins .
Forgiveness? Under whose authority? He has no more authority to forgive sins than do I.
This man is really bad. If I were RC I’d leave the church...heading the same way the Episcopal church went.

No sin is unforgiveable if one turns to Jesus and asks with repentance. That’s Christianity 101.
While I think this will only encourage more abortions, I cannot get past John 20:23
OTOH, I know several women who have had abortions, have sought forgiveness and have had their sin forgiven through penance. They have ALL become solid pro-life advocates (protesting in front of clinics, appearing on talk shows to talk about the evils of abortion, etc)

This is an act of futility. GOD has already forgiven those who repent for abortion. HE doesn’t even remember what they did.
God forgives and forgets our sin. Isaiah 43:25 says, “I, even I, am HE who blots out your transgressions, for MT OWN sake, and remembers your sins no more
It is sinful to bring back forgiven transgressions.
Penance should be ‘work’. Change the Our Father to the 2000 year old version, Pater Noster ... Make the sinner learn the dead language.
