Ohio is poised to become the second state in this country to ban abortion because of a fetal diagnosis of Down syndrome this fall. As a pro-choice woman who has a 7-year-old daughter with Down syndrome, I find this absolutely appalling.
This is an issue that hits close to home for me: If I had had a prenatal diagnosis, I would have obtained an abortion. Today, I am beyond grateful that I didnt. But I cannot ever in any circumstances imagine insisting others not have that right.
STORY: Moms Emotional Facebook Post About Baby With Down Syndrome Goes Viral
Studies vary, but anywhere from 67 percent to 85 percent of women who learn their baby has Down Syndrome terminate their pregnancies, according to a 2012 University of South Carolina review published in the medical journal Prenatal Diagnosis. Ironically, I asked my doctor several times for an amniocentesis. She talked me out of it, emphasizing that the blood screening tests Id taken boasted over a 90-percent detection rate. The uneasiness and anxiety I experienced throughout my pregnancy were blown off as first-mom jitters. Interesting. I never thought of the reduction of Down’s kids was due to abortion but it makes sense.
90% of Downs babies are aborted. I have read pro life stories where people where told their baby had Downs but they decided not to abortion. When the baby was born it was fine. I often wonder if couples are just told that to get them to abort. Many Downs parents have suspected as much.
Well said.
“that parents should have the right to kill a child up to 3 months old,”
I’d ask him, “Why stop there?”
If their teenage kid is doing drugs, or hanging with the wrong crowd, just slip into the bedroom, put the pillow over their head, and pull the trigger.
After all why should the parent be inconvenienced by having to be a parent.
People like this should be locked in a deep dark hole, and never allowed human contact. They are the textbook definition of evil.
Phillip K Dick did a story on this, I think, where parents could kill a kid until it was smart enough to do advanced math. Then a guy challenges the system by saying he forgot algebra.
