Gross recommends 1-2 year corporate bonds. Maybe I can find a fund of something like that in my 401k.

Years ago a huge % of my savings was in bond funds but over time it got harder and harder to justify that sector. True, there are short periods of time where bonds “aren’t as bad as stocks” but for me knowing we were going into those times beforehand was never all that easy.
