Japan Lifts Evacuation Order for Town Near Fukushima

Japan’s government has lifted a 4½-year-old evacuation order for the northeastern town of Naraha that forced the town’s 7,400 residents to leave following the 2011 nuclear disaster at the nearby Fukushima power plant.

Naraha is the first town to get the evacuation order lifted, among seven municipalities forced to empty because of radiation contamination following the earthquake and tsunami that destroyed the plant’s reactors.

The central government has said radiation levels in Naraha have fallen to levels deemed safe following decontamination efforts.

Residents have been given personal dosimeters to check their own radiation levels. To accommodate their concerns, the town is also running 24-hour monitoring at a water-filtration plant, testing tap water for radioactive materials.

Toshiko Yokota, a 53-year-old homemaker said she came back to attend Saturday’s ceremony and clean her home, and that she eventually wants to move back with her husband.

“My friends are all in different places because of the nuclear accident, and the town doesn’t even look the same, but this is still my hometown and it really feels good to be back.

ROFL. Radiating with energy. First party back will be a real blast. Tsunami of emotions.

OK. That was too much.

I’m sure they’ll all be fine now. I’m thinking of moving there myself from NYC.

Cue the NYC comparisons,

Did anyone ever more back to Three Mile Island? Has anyone, other than irradiated and dying outcasts, moved back to Chernobyl?

You can have CLEAN energy. You can have CHEAP energy. You can have ABUNDANT energy. You can have SAFE energy. But usually not all of the above.

You can have SAFE energy

There is no such thing as "safe" energy. Or much "safe" of anything else.

There are only relative degrees of risk which must be balanced with expected need and return.

It has been my opinion for many years that if the free market were permitted to develop unfettered conventional energy resources we would not have any pressing need for nuclear power and the risks associated with it.

Coal is no longer "dirty". Hence the Co2 carbon scam, it's the only way the Luddites know how to attack coal as an energy source. There is more than enough coal and oil to power the world until the time comes when technology leapfrogs completely over nuclear power.
