And Robert E. Lee didn’t even own slaves. His wife inherited her father’s but they were freed before the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and would have been freed sooner had not their labor been critical to paying off debts of her father’s estate. Furthermore, early in the war, their great hero, Lincoln, said he could care less about the slaves, it was about the preservation of the Union. Be one or another, just NOT divided. And, freed blacks also owned slaves, and were sometimes harsher masters than the whites!
My great-great grandfather was a “Rebel” at Shiloh. He did not have any slaves; he did his own “slave” work on the farm.
