More concerned with their bags than burning alive: Passengers on burning plane stop for luggage
The Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 10 September 2015 | Darren Boyle and Flora Drury

Passengers on board a British Airways flight which was forced to abort a take off after an engine burst into flames have been criticised for stopping for their cabin baggage before evacuating the aircraft.

The Boeing 777-200 ER reached 90mph when the Captain Chris Henkey, 63, was forced to abort his takeoff at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas.

After safety stopping the aircraft, Captain Henkey ordered the passengers to evacuate the aircraft, but video footage shows many of those fleeing the aircraft brought their cabin luggage with them.

I figure the rest of this thread will comprise full and gory details of what we would do if while trying to evacuate from a burning plane we are blocked by some numpty reaching for his overhead luggage.

Best to be fit enough to go to the exit over the seats.

Some of that may be hysterical behavior of people in shock. When the going gets rough some folks want to see and clutch their possessions closely. It takes a stern though diplomatic fight attendant to take control and get them out asap, bag or no bag.

They didn’t want to leave their souvenirs from Circus Circus behind.

this is my fear: the plane having engine trouble or fire and I'm going to get some gumby moving @1mph or a prissy little nitwit grabbing her makeup bag....

I don't mind dying when I'm due but I hate thinking I would die due to some nincompoops...

A construction worker was finishing up in the outdoor toilet when his Carhartt jacket fell through the hole.
He had been gone a while and one of his coworkers came looking for him.
It was dark of course but when the coworker opened the door he saw the man fishing around with his arm down the hole to the shoulder.
He explained what had happened and his coworker, disgusted, said,
“You really don’t plan on keeping it after that do you?”
And the man replied, “Oh no! But my lunch is in it.”

I think this is normalization bias- things are changing rapidly and you still think things are normal.

Believe me, it happens.

I had an emergency evacuation with an engine fire on the ground and instead of running for the exits, people were popping open the bins to grab their huge suitcases they stuffed tightly in the overheads.

If the guy spent a good five minutes making sure that he laid his coat down properly so it wouldn't wrinkle, then even in the case of massive fire I think it would only be polite to allow him the time he needs to carefully remove it from the overhead compartment and put it on while blocking the aisle.

One of my college buds was a flight attendant for Virgin for a time.

He told me the reason why airlines “require” a dude attendant is because if/when the shiite hits the fan, passengers will be too panicky to listen to a woman so a guy has to be there to take command. And it’s somewhere supposedly written that no one really pays attention to the safety instructions about flotation devices etc.

They could do me a service and burn all my luggage. The three of us went away for a couple weeks this summer. When I carried my bag into the hall to leave I saw my wife had five bags plus a backpack.

I told her she had to leave three bags but she said she could not remember which bag had what so we had to move in parts all the way with all these bags.

Then we hired a service to pick up three bags and deliver them home for the return trip but four more bags were added from buying stuff there and we had to buy the extra luggage bags too. Some are still packed.

Whenever I fly, I take a good look around the plane and realize that if the plane crashes, these are the schmucks I’m going to most likely wind up spending eternity with.

I remember the news videos of the exit at the nightclub that caught fire because of the fireworks.

People were piled one on top of another with their heads out the door.

Somebody must have tripped, and everyone just fell on top of that person.

I wonder is it time to rewrite the safety instructions which seem to relate more to the days of propeller aircraft that could land safely in the sea with passengers getting out to swim away in their life jackets blowing whistles and flashing lights to attract attention.

Let’s face it 99 times out of 100 if you’re on board a jet airliner and it crashes into the sea you’re not coming home again.

More emphasis must be given to the proper evacuation procedure in the case of a fire (what to do with old people and kids etc?) because the evidence shows passengers have no idea how to behave properly in such a crisis.

Normalcy bias. The whole country is experiencing it right now. One of my friends had a gate evacuation where the cabin filled with smoke during boarding with the door open. It was something electrical, if I recall. They had one pax who refused to leave his seat. He kept saying, "I have to get to New York!" Finally the chief purser got right in his face and screamed "This flight is canceled!! It is not going to New York!!" Which finally got him out of his seat.

Fortunatley I never had to do an evacuation, but his does not surprise me in the least. People and their crap.... Grrr! My thought was always what would happen when a slide busted because of some guy and his stupid golf clubs.

“because the evidence shows passengers have no idea how to behave properly in such a crisis.”

No they don’t. They’ll be scared little children. He attended a flight attendant seminar (mandatory) and the Singapore Airline chief attendant who was retired told the room that passengers who survive a crash will listen to the strongest individual in the group. Usually it;s one of the pilots because passengers dont really have any respect for flight attendants whose duties is to get them coffee and sell them magazines, i kid you not.
