As for the ‘patience’ idea, Daddy Bush went low-key in 1992 and lost to a hillbilly politician from Arkansas.
A couple of weeks after the election, as reporter asked Bush why he did not have much of a reelection campaign. Bush responded that, he thought as incumbent, he had the election in the bag and no reason to waste a lot of time campaigning.
