Russia intensifies naval exercises off Syrian coast - sources

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has stepped up naval training exercises off the Syrian coast in recent months and is preparing to hold more drills, according to several sources, behaviour likely to fuel U.S. assertions that Moscow is building up its forces in the region.
A squadron of five Russian naval ships, equipped with guided missiles, has set off to conduct manoeuvres in Syrian territorial waters, including possibly firing rockets, a source close to the Russian navy told Reuters on Friday.
"They will train to repulse an attack from the air and to defend the coast, which means firing artillery and testing short-range air defence systems, " the source said, adding that the exercise had been agreed with the Syrian government.
News of the drill coincided with calls from Russia for Washington to restart direct military-to-military cooperation to avert "unintended incidents" near Syria.
Sources in the United States, Israel and Lebanon have said that Russian soldiers have joined combat operations on Syrian soil or were preparing to do so.

They’re putting a lot of wear and tear on ships that were built during the Cold War.
Is it possible Russia’s REAL objective here is to establish a reaction force in defense of Iran in response to Israel’s inevitable attack on Iran???
Maybe Russia know that there are more WMDs than we think?
They need only stay off the coast and shoot missiles.
These are mostly Soviet ships built in the 70's and 80's and were never intended to be in service this long.
They're going to put a bunch of hours on old, poorly maintained engines and other systems trying to keep station with each other.

So really, our administration is just mad because the Russians are doing it first. We would be expected to defend Iran against Israel according to the 'IRAN DEAL'.
The Syrian government is the last Russian/Soviet client state left in the Middle East and it has been reduced to a rump state with little control of its territory.
The Russians are trying to prop up one of their last best customers for their crappy weapon systems.
