Trump is ‘Lonesome Rhodes’
washingtontimes.com ^ | September 14, 2015 | Cal Thomas

Rarely and perhaps not in modern times has a presidential campaign more resembled the classic 1957 film, "A Face in the Crowd." Written by Budd Schulberg and starring Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau, the storyline follows an Arkansas hayseed named Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes (Griffith), whom Marcia Jeffries (Neal) discovers in a county jail.

Jeffries has a local radio show on which she interviews interesting characters. She finds Rhodes irresistible and puts him on the air. Rhodes becomes a sensation, eventually climbing the ladder to his own network TV show and then, as politicians approach him for endorsements, a self-described kingmaker.

I think of Rhodes when I watch Donald Trump. The two have much in common. Rhodes' view of women seems to mirror Mr. Trump's. In one scene, Rhodes says, "A guitar beats a woman every time." He marries more than once and has several affairs during and in between those marriages.

As he becomes intoxicated with a beverage clearly not the milk of human kindness, Rhodes brags: "I'm not just an entertainer. I'm an influence, a wielder of opinion, a force a force!"

I'm a Cruz supporter who is thoroughly enjoying what trump is doing, so your assumptions are invalid.

I'm just a stickler for facts and neither movie fits/works at all.

The closest movie analogy would be CITIZEN KANE; except that Hearst actually was a pol, tried to start his own party, was part of Tammany Hall, and NEVER got anywhere much. Also Trump doesn't have a field of mistresses, is NOT a life long Dem, isn't starting a third party, and on and on and on. But at least Hearst was a very successful businessman.

Fixed it for ya! Past tense - kinda like your relevance.

I guess it’s all subjective, because I don’t see the Citizen Kane comparison at all.
Kane was a newspaper man, that became drunk with the idea of his own power. That seems to much more mimic the idea of who the MSM is today. They believe that they are the Kingmakers, not the recipients of their blessings.
I always believed the message of CK was money, and power can never give you the one thing all humans must have; Love.

It’d be fun to sit around with you over a beer and discuss old Movies one day.

I was bashing it on Hearst's REAL life; not really "CITIZEN KANE" and grasping at straws, for even that movie analogy. THERE IS NO MOVIE ANALOGY; NONE !

I love old movies and really do know them; so yes, it would be a great way to spend our time.

Are you familiar with "KEEPER OF THE FLAME" ?

Haven’t seen that one yet.
Love Tracy, and Hepburn’s work together though so I will be checking it out soon.
You could tell they had something when they worked together.

That’s what I LOVE about Gary Oldman. He not only is unafraid of playing a bad guy, he does it in a spectacular way, making the viewer LIKE the bad guy, no matter how despicable.

Proof? I offer “Zorg” from “The Fifth Element”. The ultimate slave to Satan, yet his treatment of the mangalore is EPIC in its pure crony capitalist essence.

The man is phenominal in his talent. That he is NOT a MAJOR star tells me more about Hollywood than anything I hear.

I agree
it is a really good movie
Supposedly a sort of expose of Arthur Godfrey

As to Trump....My perception is that he is a phony as the day is long yet there are a fair number of voices that I respect who say he is genuine.... Try as I will I don’t see it

You are kidding...right? Where is the sarcasm...forgot to put it after your comments????

I am beginning to wonder who the “true” communists are in this country. It appears they come under many disguises. Including the Republican and Democrat Parties...plus many so-called conservatives.

I rate Cal Thomas as a decent and honorable man who was offended by the scandals and hypocrisy in the religious media world back in the 1980’s.

Cal’s criticism of religious media earned him relationships in the mainstream media world which led him to RINO Roger Ailes, who gave Cal his own show on CNBC in the early 1990’s and later on Fox News Saturday nights.

Sometimes I wonder if a hosepipe and a crack pipe are the same thing.

I see— but not if Trump is a loyal conservative..
or even he has Americas interests at heart..
when they do not benefit Donald Trump..

Wondering is the spice of life.. as long as you do not chase Unicorns..

I agree with Cal Thomas.

There’s lot of boasting and long-winded rhetoric from Trump, but we never hear specifics from him.

Last night he blew a chance to outline his foreign policy views to America’s vets. A more serious candidate would have told the American people what he thought America’s place in the world should be.

Trump is feeding off others hopes, dreams and fears. People project onto whatever they think he represents to them. There is no real substance to Trump’s politics because he has none.

And he can’t even name a Bible passage, something every American should be familiar with. Trump is a political chameleon and a demagogue of the highest order.

We have seen his likes before in history.

“Telling the truth is not sarcasm..

The bad guys?? LOL Here’s the deal. You come across as a liberal, left wing loon. The truth evades you because you don’t realise the light has changed at the intersection.

If you really still believe it is business as usual in this country, you have been sleeping for years. The bad guys aren’t the conservatives on this forum. The bad guys are ruling your life in Washington DC and they don’t like you.

That Republican herd running for President against the cow Hillary and the Marxist Sanders don’t like you. The cow and the marxist don’t like you either. They want your money and they need your vote and then POOOOFFFF, you are the problem and the enemy.

Trump isn’t the bad guy, not yet anyway, he is just a rich guy that isn’t going to cost us anything and could possibly beat the crap out of the cow, or marxist or buffoon (Biden).

So update your life and get with the program and start focusing on taking back this country. It isn’t going to be easy, it will take years to recover; but, it can be done. Trump is smart, his pals are smart and it is now or never.

One other thought, you need to know that there are some very conservative democrats and there are some very liberal Republicans. The Republican brand has lost its way. Socialists control the Democrat Party. The conservative democrats and Republicans are looking for someone with the courage to fight the socialists and liberals. Trump stepped up to plate.
