Maybe I didn't express my point very well. My point is that Trump has been schmoozing with politicians his entire career, and he is now a politician: making other people's faith in him as an outsider somewhat wishful.
Friedman's point is that you shouldn't trust anyone but yourself, especially when the other person has the power of the government behind him.
