The real story behind Trump's Florida gaming obsession

Jeb Bush was ready to counterpunch at Wednesday night’s debate when asked about Donald Trump’s statement that politicians could be bought. "The one guy that had some special interests that I know of that tried to get me to change my views on something—that was generous and gave me money—was Donald Trump," Bush said. "He wanted casino gambling in Florida."

That’s when Trump cut him off—and failed to tell the truth. “I didn't,” Trump said.

He and his company have repeatedly been on record trying to get casino deals in one form or another in Florida. From hiring lobbyists to taking a former business partner to court, Trump’s interest in getting a piece of Florida’s gaming industry has been documented in news articles from Tallahassee to Miami. Trump’s involvement in expanding Florida gaming—an effort that regularly fails in the state Capitol due to the influence of conservative lawmakers—is well-known among state capital reporters, politicians and lobbyists alike.

So a real estate developer wanted to give a politician money to forward his business aim of building casinos.

I fail to see what’s bad about this. Evidently the people who didn’t want the casinos built paid Jeb more.

I’m pretty sure he held at least one Bush for Governor fundraiser, and donated at that.

Have you been to Atlantic City lately? The Taj Mahal is crumbling (literally missing pieces of the facade) and is another horrible structure left to rot on the boardwalk. Could use it for a Walking Dead episode!

No, I’ve never been to Atlantic City at all - don’t care to go there either. You know, I remember something in Trump’s book, “Artof The Deal,” in which he stated he never liked gambling, but got involved in it in AC anyway - and it was purely a monetary decision on his part. He had reservations, and should have listened to his gut feeling on it - that venture turned into a nightmare for him. But, he picked himself up, dusted himself off and started all over again. I don’t think failure is a word in Donald’s vocabulary.

From what I can dig up - I haven’t researched it in depth - but there were casinos built in Florida - on the Indian Reservation. Trump pulled out of the deal and I guess his protege closed the deal with the Indians = who later bought him out. There is a lot more to the story, but I can’t remember everything right now.

Are you assuming that Joe six-pack dissects debates the same way you do? Nonsense! And, to be honest, I didn’t learn much about any of their positions tonight. It was the take-down-Trump show, or Trump said this or Trump said that. Then a few others got into squabbles and Carly wouldn’t shut her mouth and Cruz wouldn’t fight for position. Sure, when called on he gave excellent answers, but, dang it - he should have just jumped in there like Carly did. He had things to say too, and he was being too danged polite. He needs to learn to use his elbows a little more - push and shove like some of the rest of them or he will be silenced. However, your opinion is your opinion, not necessarily mine, but this is waht makes America - America.

Sounds to me like Bush lied: the story says Trump’s donation was to the state GOP, and that at the time Bush claimed to have nothing to do with it.

Jeb Bush lost all moral authority when he mishandled the Terri Schiavo incidence.

A man who allows Medical murder and then claims to respect all life from beginning to end has lost all moral authority to call anybody else out regarding various shades of truth including interpretive issues of legal and political truth.

In my opinion Bush is just a moral failure who supports illegal activities like illegal immigrants and mercy killing.

And the people that quote him or support him or anything he says as fact, I suspect, are part of the elite GOP.

You can go pound sand

What have politicians DONE that is pro American or conservative? Nothing but destroy the USA. so they lie and give speeches to play to the conservative crowd but never do anything and you fools keep believing the lies.

None of you trump bashers and lovers of corrupt politicians never have answered the question:

What have U.S. politicians ever done that is conservative or for America at the national level? I’m talking as in passing a conservative law that reduces government that really has an effect on reducing government , reducing the debt, really stops illegals etc what? I’ve seen nothing only the opposite as in the Iran deal and Obamatrade.

politicians have destroyed the USA. and you still trust them?

Trump can’t kill a dead corpse.

All these politicians are corrupt and owned by foreign interests and rich internationalist donors which give $15 million dollar donations at a time.

Trump is not owned by anyone. did any of the others say they don’t take those $10 million dollar donations? No they didn’t . Only Trump again.

This is why none of them ever say anything against China or Mexico. But only Trump says something against China and Mexico.

Also Trump is the only one who said he will deport illegals. The other politicians play to the conservative crowd but then betray American citizens who voted for them . These politicians have never done anything for U.S. citizens nor anything conservative.

Just 2 recent examples: All the politicians voted for the 2 most anti-American things ever . The Corker bill which made the Iran deal unstoppable (Iranian nukes) and TPA which makes obama trade unstoppable

Trump has 60% in the Drudge poll, that’s more than all the other 10 dwarves combined LOL

Only Trump is not owned . Only Trump doesn’t want to enrich himself with a long political career as he is a billionaire and 69 years old.
Only Trump has a chance at performing the overwheliming task of resurrecting a dead USA. My vote goes to Trump.

As to any negatives about Trump. We have had an anti American communist in office for 8 years. How much worse can it get? Literally, anything is an improvement over Obama. Well, maybe not Hillary, but any Republican.

BTW, we already have a path to citizenship. 1. Become a legal permanent resident for 5 years. 2. Apply for and pass a citizenship test. 3. Pledge to uphold and defend the US Constitution. What the amnesty freaks are talking about is a shortcut.

I believe I am saying he is a mercenary in business by his own admission. Do not know how this carries over into the presidency.
I do not have a clear sense of Trump’s core values.

Bush looks weak, Carly too strong, Cruz was quite good, Rubio did better, Paul may be right but he comes accross one issue kooky, Christie isn’t presidential material, Kasich is too much the insider, Walker needs a personality, Trump was good under the circumstances.

The debate format was lousy, intended to pit each other against each other using misquotes and intentionally keeping them away ffrom Hillary.

True, it’s a big nothing burger for the lame media and Trump detractors.

As Trump gave to the FL party and not Bush. Maybe in Bush’s mind he is the “Republican Party of Florida” but his name wasn’t on Trump’s check.

Trump actively pursing gambling in Florida doesn’t seemed to be happening. Trump did express his opinion and in 2013 that Miami should get gambling. An article linked (#64) earlier here ‘presumes,’ their words, that he does want it since he bought and is renovating a Miami hotel.

The same 2013 article concludes:

Casino News - “For now, Trump is set on moving forward with his $250 million renovation of Doral, which he expects to return to its former opulence once the renovation is complete. But make no mistake, Mr. Combover has his eyes set on a casino in the event that lawmakers allow it. “If [casino] gambling ever comes to Florida, Doral is the single, best location,” he said, as quoted by the Miami Herald. “

Trump set himself up for gambling as we see, and he expressed what would happen if the circumstances allowed, but he’s not giving it any level of effort pushing for it. I’m sure at this time Trump has his mind on the presidency.

Yes, though Bush is referring back to when he first ran for guv of FL, as I understand it.

Trump has already said he played the game.
