National Right To Life Committee: Government Shutdown 'Won't Accomplish What We Want'
Townhall.com ^ | September 17, 2015 | Matt Vespa

On September 30, the government runs out of money, and a sizable portion of House Republicans have already made their intentions known about one thing on any future spending bills: they will not vote to fund Planned Parenthood (via Politico):

Government funding runs out Sept. 30, and dozens of conservative House Republicans want to use the upcoming legislative debate to cut off federal funding for the women’s health group.

But in two separate meetings — first, in a Senate GOP lunch Wednesday afternoon, and later during a closed House Republican meeting Wednesday evening — lawmakers discussed using the fast-track budget reconciliation process instead. That could help avoid a government shutdown, which looms at the end of the month.

Gov. Bobby Jindal voiced his anger about the recent string of videos that allegedly show the non-profit engaging in human trafficking of body parts from aborted babies during last night’s Republican debate. Granted, it was the undercard debate:

If we can’t defund Planned Parenthood now, if we can’t stand for innocent human life after these barbaric videos, it is time to be done with the Republican Party,” If we can’t defund Planned Parenthood now, if we can’t stand for innocent human life after these barbaric videos, it is time to be done with the Republican Party.”

Yet, concerning public opinion, a CNN/ORC poll found that 71 percent supported Congress passing a bill to keep the government running.

Also, National Right To Life’s President Carol Tobias said that a shutdown over Planned Parenthood isn’t going to do much regarding their agenda. For starters, Ms. Tobias lists the main reason for why a shutdown over funding would be a fool’s errand: Obama is in the White House; he has veto power; and he has the votes to sustain it.

Quite frankly, I think Planned Parenthood is a vile organization, and I resent the fact that they get any tax money,” Ms. Tobias said. “But realistically, with President Obama in the White House holding that veto pen, I don’t know that any government shutdown could accomplish what we want. What we have to do is get a new pro-life president in, and we’d have a much better chance of actually taking away their money.”

Ms. Tobias said she preferred the approach of stand-alone measures, like those the House is set to consider this week, denying funding only for Planned Parenthood affiliates that perform abortions. She said the reality of the situation was that President Obama “would be willing to shut down the government, take money away from the military, take money away from the national parks, put all of the federal employees on leave — he would do anything and everything to keep that money flowing to Planned Parenthood.”

The talk about repealing Obamacare and defunding Planned Parenthood is limited because of that reality. In principle, of course, conservatives should support such policies that seek to replace Obamacare with something more efficient, more market-based, and does more to reduce costs; the latter of which constituted the core of the debate. Remember the whole Obamacare will save trillions over the next ten years talking point?

As long as Obama is in the White House, he won’t sign appropriation bills that defund Planned Parenthood–and he certainly won’t gut his signature domestic achievement. The best way to accomplish both of those policy goals is to elect a Republican in 2016.

Thanks, I made a stupid error, and didn’t notice until reading your question.

No Republicans voted for ObmaCare.

What NRTL did do was this:

National Right to Life favored the Stupak Amendment, and insisted that Republicans vote for it. Further, they threatened any Republican who didn’t vote for it with their active opposition to that Republican during the 2010 fall election.

The Republicans caved, even those who could see the eventual outcome, right down to the last man. One hundred percent voted for the Stupak Amendment, along with a bunch of Dems who were opposed to abortions. Stupak handily passed.

Nobody believed the Amendment would stick; eventually it would/will be overridden in some fashion and that Government funded abortion would become part of ObamaCare.

With a green light, the ’Pro-Life’ Dems could vote for ObamaCare, and although many hard-line Leftists were angry, enough of them also could see the end game, and agreed to vote pass ObamaCare.

A couple days later ObamaCare passed the House.

“We don’t want to finally solve the problem because then we would no longer have a reason to exist as a money sucking organization...”

They still want to keep sending out those mailers to to the old dumb baby boomers begging for money. And they sure as hell can;t keep doing that if they succeed in their goals.

Much like the unions, racial shakedown groups and the GOP.

[ It would do exactly what we want.
Put the Obama in the position of shutting government down absent funding a murderous organization selling human body parts without consent of the deceased or guardians. It’s HIS decision to shut down.

Any government insisting on funding this atrocity DESERVES shutdown. ]

Instead the spineless wonders in the GOP will continue to fund the government over the dissected bodies of dead parted out babies.

[ Fund everything except PP with the stipulation that once the Congressional investigation is done it can be funded again if needed......If Obama wants to shut down the government over .000001% of the budget before the investigation is completed....GO FOR IT BIG BOY!!! ]

The Republicans wouldn’t be shutting down the government if Obama was VETOing the budget, OBAMA would be SHUTTING DOWN THE GOVERNMENT!

My gawd, mithc the bitch and bohner the bawler are freeking stuipid.

The National Right To Life Committee’s only agenda is capturing as much funding as is humanly possible.

If Planned Parenthood was shut down and abortion-on-demand was outlawed, their reason for being would cease to exist.

What bureaucracy ever worked toward their own demise?

Well, if Planned Parenthood got de-funded, NRL will lose a key wedge issue to include in their fundraising letters and raise lots of money.

I would imagine they have a symbiotic relationship with PP and the corrupt politicians in DC. Cronies all.

Virtually all so called altruistic “awareness” organizations started out as altruistic until somebody ran the numbers on a national or even world scale and then the skimming starts.

Look at Komen http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/08/us-usa-healthcare-komen-research-idUSTRE8171KW20120208

(snip) The organization’s 2011 financial statement reports that 43 percent of donations were spent on education, 18 percent on fund-raising and administration, 15 percent on research awards and grants, 12 percent on screening and 5 percent on treatment. (snip)

And then this again . . http://www.lifenews.com/2013/10/22/komen-still-sends-big-bucks-to-planned-parenthood-abortion-business/

Then some others https://www.charitywatch.org/articles-and-media/american-cancer-society/111

Like the GOP, they probably want the issue more than they want to end abortion.

It's what I've been saying all along, Pro-Life, Inc. DOES NOT want to end abortion. They want to keep it "safe and legal and rare" so they can keep raising money.

You are exactly right, and right to be incensed by my mistake.

Please see post #21.
