I read that it was a discipline he imposed on himself, maybe at or after military school, and he stressed it to his children, the three eldest (by Ivana) who have turned out to lead very productive lives. He had an older brother with severe alcohol problems who died young. That probably figured in. I know the example of my wild Irish uncles turned me off of drinking for life.
