Another prime example of gun control at its finest is the story of these two unarmed officers being gunned down by… a thug with a gun. Wait, didn’t gun control stop it? Of course not, and here is the story submitted by a reader. These two officers responded to a robbery in progress when they were ambushed by an armed man that had a warrant out for his role in a shooting and grenade attack. The two unarmed officers responded to the call to the Hattersley Estate in Mottram.

According to BBC: http://www.bbc.com/news/10220974 all modern semi-auto rifles are banned and Parliament banned all handguns with a 5yr prison term for possession.
I say I agree with the spirit of dadfly's post that the crooks have the upper hand. Particularly when compared to here in Virginia when I can walk into a store, spend 5 minutes filing a form, a 30 second phone call and the swipe of a credit card and walk out with any number of firearms.
Or, participate in a private transfer purchase with no paperwork and no phone calls.
For less headache than a Brit goes through in the UK to get a shotgun, an American can purchase a fully automatic, belt-fed machinegun.
Public and police don’t therefore feel that we need all police to be armed.
I'm certain that the families and friends of Officers Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes understand and take comfort from the knowledge their countrymen consider their loved ones lives "acceptable losses".
After all, it's clear that maintaining a self-image of moral superiority is more important than protecting individual lives. What is less clear, however, is precisely how arming and training police to protect themselves and their fellow citizens is a "bad thing".
As a UK gun owner, I can tell you so............................... Good idea, seeing you were caught with your pants down in 1939. Looks like you might need them again in the coming years.
In fairness there are too many US police running around with guns and killing people for horrid offenses like taking pictures and having the temerity to live at an address similar to that of a criminal.

This story is a few years old. I think gun control in the UK, a small island nation without the traditions and demographics of the US, can work. So can compulsory ownership, in a country like Switzerland.
It’s true that gun control can greatly reduce the number of gun homicides, if it is stringently enforced under certain circumstances.
Just have to be willing to surrender that whole troublesome freedom thing.

Then what’s with the horror stories of UK folk shooting vermin breaking and entering and getting jail sentences? Does it vary with locale?
What do you shoot there? How hard was it to get? How much is ammo?
This is a false story. I has to be because they have gun control laws in Britain. And that means that gun violence simply cannot occur. /sarcasm -off
Also worth pointing out that this was the first time in several years that British police officers had been murdered by a criminal. In the US, it happens on a weekly, if not daily basis and is so common it doesn’t usually make the papers.
It is probably why US cops are so jumpy and will gun down suspects at the drop of a hat. If we are going to have this debate and have people insult my country, lets at least get all the facts straight and in there.
1—Gun ownership in the UK is for shooting and animal control, its always been a minority pastime/ownership in the UK. Guns just aren’t as part of the culture as in the UK.
2—Assault rifles, semi autos over .22 are banned. Semi autos over 22 converted to single shot are perfectly legal. Most not all but most handguns are banned on the UK mainland. NOT in NI, which has much looser gun laws. Also some pistol licences are available in the UK. CC is allowed only if the person has a job or lifestyle which needs CC.
3—IMO, the UK should be somewhere inbetween the UK current too stringent laws and the US laws. I don’t think either is the answer.
The UK is not violent enough that police and public don’t feel or want an all armed force. With all respect, we are a far less violent society than the US, esp where gun crime, murder and gun murder are concerned.
I am a UK gun owner, pro-gun, anti UK gun laws, yet I also don’t want an all armed UK police force. More armed units, more officers trained (perhaps all trained), but actually carrying, no. And most UK gun owners think like me, even if we love our guns. Gun laws and armed police are two different issues.

Whilst I oppose most of the UK’s gun laws, really mate, you are on a losing wicket if you want to compare the UK and US on violence, guns and murder.
UK guns are not for self defence though, they are for shooting, sports, animal and vermin control.
If liberals knew how easy it is for a mediocre machinist to make a gun their heads would explode. One of our maintenance people who does some welding made a cannon.
It’s percentages. It’s the deaths from guns in a country of around 63 million vs a country of 300 million plus. Since the UK is so tight on guns why is the deaths per guns higher in the UK than the US? If you want to extrapolate the UK population to the US’ you’ll find the gun deaths higher for the UK. Just saying.
