Wacko Dan Rather movie still insists forged Bush-National Guard documents were real
NY POST ^ | September 30, 2015 | | KYLE SMITH

The classic definition of chutzpah — the guy who murders his parents and then begs for mercy because he’s an orphan — gets a rewrite with “Truth,” a movie insisting forged documents are real.

Robert Redford, making no effort to look or sound like Dan Rather, plays the CBS newsman ruined after he presented obviously forged documents about George W. Bush’s Texas Air National Guard service.

It was September 2004, two months before Bush was to be re-elected in a race against John Kerry, and Rather producer Mary Mapes is desperate for a scoop.

Researchers sent out to find information damaging to Bush contact everyone in the chain of command during Bush’s National Guard days. (In one unintentionally revealing moment, co-written and directed by The Amazing Spider-Man's James Vanderbilt, Mapes is shown watching a Swift Boat Veteran TV commercial, showing a complete lack of interest in their stories.)

Mapes found squirrely retired National Guard colonel Bill Burkett, who gave her photocopied memos purportedly showing Bush had been AWOL, and whose font and spacing perfectly matched default settings on a 21st-century Microsoft Word program.

Two of CBS’s own document experts raised doubts about them. Bush hater Burkett agreed to hand over the documents on condition that Mapes put him in touch with the John Kerry campaign, which he wanted to assist. Mapes and Rather ran with the story anyway, defending it for days.

“Truth” is based on Mapes’ memoir, “Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power.” Mapes, who hasn’t worked in TV news since the scandal, and Rather insist to this day they were right, and Rather even sued CBS for breach of contract. The lawsuit was laughed out of court — in much the same way that “Truth” will be laughed out of theaters.

No wonder.

The same people think the birth certificate Barack Obama produced is real.

Hollywood and its liberal masters just can’t let go of their hatred for President Bush even though he’s been out of office for almost eight years. They will continue to spin the hateful narrative and aim it at the young, most of whom were still youngsters at the time this bogus story first aired. The young are not allowed to know the truth.

At least you were well nourished.

That popcorn looks good.

But did you err by not getting a giant sized drink?

I am concerned that that drink might not last through the whole box of popcorn.

I plead guilty to making the following bad prediction on the "Pajamahadeen" thread in 2007:

...

Wonder who will star in the movie?

Probably not Robert Redford...

About kerning: There was an IBM Executive typewriter that did proportional spacing. I was a temp working at a company that had one back in the mid 70s. It was only used for special projects, not for routine correspondence and documents. It was an awful thing to type on and even worse to correct errors.

Anyhow, I don't remember those typewriters being used that much back in the 1970s and I'm reasonably sure the military didn't have anything that sophisticated. For all I know, they could have still been using manual typewriters.

I once worked for the same company as Bill Burkett, he was the likely source of the actually forged documents. Although he denied it.

He lived near Abilene. And Kinko’s in Abilene is where it was copied.

Yes, Bill was capable of such a thing. He had a personal grudge with W.

Yes, the whole Rather crowd are capable of any fabrication. They are serial liars. Were then and still are. NEVER believe anything they say.

Out of all the excellent technical analysis on this site that helped uncover that hoax, the one that convinced me the most quickly, and enabled me to convince even my most liberal friends, was a guy who said just open a new document in MS Word and don’t change any settings. Type the letter and only hit return at the end of a paragraph. Compare. He then posted a gif showing this result alternating with the CBS news website posted copy of the “document”. It was a 100% perfect match. After that, anyone who has any doubt about the fact that this was a blatant hoax is not even worth discussing, let alone debating.

It seems to me that the best Mapes and Rather can claim is that a memo existed, and they they saw it or knew its contents; but failing to get their hands on it, they manufactured a poor phony in MS Word. Not exactly Pulitzer winning journalism, IMO.

BTW, Rather’s daughter was an official of the Dhimmicrap Party in the very county where Burkett lived and Rather spoke to the county committee (and met Burkett.)
