Republicans move to revive government bank loathed by conservatives

Supporters of the Export-Import Bank have secured enough Republican support to bring an extension of the agency's charter to the House floor later this month, according to sources involved in the whipping.

More than 30 Republicans have signed on to a discharge petition, which would force a vote on reauthorizing the government-backed credit agency. Republicans expect upwards of a dozen more supporters. The vast majority of Democrats are expected to sign the petition.

If the numbers hold, there is nothing the GOP leadership could do to stop a vote on an extension.

A renewal of the bank's charter would likely come to the floor after Oct. 21, when the discharge petition ripens. Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-Tenn.), a longtime supporter of the bank, is leading the effort. Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), who is a key figure in the whipping effort, said he believes the bill will "pass soon."

The Export-Import Bank has become a flashpoint in the continuing battle between conservatives and Speaker John Boehner. Boehner (R-Ohio) supports renewing the bank. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), House Financial Services Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) all oppose renewing the bank's charter.

The Export-Import Bank’s charter expired at the end of June, and GOP leaders have avoided bringing legislation to the floor to reauthorize it due to strong opposition from conservatives inside and outside the Capitol.

There has not been a successful discharge petition since the McCain-Feingold campaign finance legislation passed in 2002.

Amazingly - when democrats are in charge - NOTHING gets to the floor for a vote unless the house/senate leaders WANT it there.

Isn’t it amazing how the GOP goes to the mat when it matters to the Chamber of Commerce but on anything the base cares about it is waive the white flags.

They aren’t stupid, or cowardly. They will get large kickbacks for this, like all other crap they endorse.

I’m afraid the “dumbasses” are us. We voted these people into office and made the mistake of trusting them. The Republican Party is dead. If we can’t get Trump or Cruz elected, we’re done and the uniparty will have won. I like Carson a lot but he doesn’t appear to be a fighter and at times seems a little naïve. I’m afraid he could get manipulated or intimidated by the powers that be. I actually think it’s probably over already and we just don’t know it. I’ve never seen this level of evil in our country before and I’m 67. Dark days ahead for America and the world.

I hope Trump drives the last nail into their coffin.

**************

I hope Trump can make a clean break from the GOP. They will only continue to undermine him at every opportunity. If he’s elected president, the GOP will be a bigger obstacle than the Dems.

It should be obvious to all by now that the GOP is a lost cause.

"It should be obvious to all by now that the GOP is a lost cause."

You're totally correct.
They've been a lost cause for some time.
I think it started in the 90's under Clinton.

I believe they are getting paid off to cooperate with the Democrats regardless of which party controls the Congress or the Presidency. If certain individuals don't cooperate they are attacked in the press, their private lives maybe be exposed in the media, they maybe blackmailed in some way and even the Justice Department may called in instigate "investigations" for some minor infraction. Yeah -- I believe it's happening.

The free traitors just can't help themselves.

The systematic looting of the US economy continues unabated.

And the wall street/K street crowd just can't figure out why the majority of Americans want to see their necks stretched from the nearest lamp post.

Worshipping at the altar of “profits at all costs” will eventually end with the worshippers being ritually sacrificed.
