I'd agree with his intent to carry a larger caliber.
Wolf lobby to protest assault weapons in 3...2...1!
ping. The Colburn pack has been long identified.
You really need bullets that explosively come apart, shred or petal out a large wound channel, animals like dogs, wolves or any game animal are very hard to kill with just one shot, especially with a small caliber solid projectile at a modest velocity.
Big velocity or big bullet.
Thank goodness he learned that lesson. A .380 is a pretty puny round to be carrying as your defensive sidearm in the woods.
The time he spent chambering a round (racking the slide) could have been spent shooting his attacker.
Color me skeptical. This story reads like a Jack London knockoff.
Good story. But this is 2015. So of course I’ve got to ask, how many federal, state, and local violations will he be charged with?
A .380 is awfully small for going into the woods. He’s lucky the single shot and sound scared the wolves away.
Pistols are only good for killing people #LibSpeak
His first mistake was not having one in the pipe. He was just carrying an expensive paperweight.
Very scary story!
A .380 FMJ will do its job if you do yours. I have a couple .380s, and am getting another one, because I do like the caliber. It’s a suitable round for up-close and personal work. I’ll be 65 on my next birthday, so I’m not as strong as I used to be. Thus, now I pretty much limit my handguns to calibers that begin with a 3 (which includes the metric variety, such as 9mm, which, caliber-wise, is the same as a .380, but with more “oomph”).
I too would have carried something like a lightweight 9mm or even a .44 mag but as he showed, sometimes any gun is better than no gun.
I read an article in Sports Afield maybe in the 1950s by an old Alaska Sourdough named Russell Anabelle. He was leading a mule train up a frozen creek when he was attacked by a she wolf and her yearling cubs.
He sat down with his backpack against a tree and used his six inch Colt Woodsman .22LR (another John Browning invention) to dispatch the group. I can’t recall if he actually killed any but I think he did.
He did say they ought to make a monument to the .22
Would the wolf pack attack & eat a member of the pack that was mortally wounded???
We have coyotes where I live and they can also get aggressive—but mostly against smaller animals.
Gotta get a bigger gun. Though the mini .380s are so easy to throw in a pocket. (with a Nemesis)
Wisconsin DNR will probably deny there were wolves. Maybe it was just dogs that looked like wolves. Also there are no mountain lions either. People should not worry they will say. : ) CHOMP!
“In the market for a bigger gun.”
I’ll bet he is.
Awesome story!
“He surmised that the perfect wind for scouting also turned out to be the perfect wind for unintentionally bumping into the wolves in what he described as, ‘their living room.’
That’s the FIRST thing I learned about hunting deer. You have to imagine you’re in their house. Works like a charm. :)
