The world's last flying Avro Vulcan is preparing for its final ever flights after the decision was made to permanently ground the Cold War veteran jet. The four-engined bomber, which saw action in the Falklands, is undertaking two final missions on October 10 and 11, flying long loops of the country from north to south. Chief pilot Martin Withers, who broke the record for the world's longest bombing mission in April 1982, is currently preparing a route for the final flights, which are being designed so as many people as possible will be able to see the jet.

I grew up in Abbotsford, and always remember the Vulcan opening the show. Biggest military airshow in the world, at least it was. I don’t know how it stacks up today.
Hopefully the final flights will include at least one trip through the Mach Loop.

As a kid, I always thought the Vulcan bomber was one of the coolest looking aircraft. It was featured in the openning scenes in that great Bond film, “Thunderball”.
With a crew of five the Vulcan had one drawback from a survivebility standpoint. Only the pilots were on ejection seats. If something happened at low altitude the three in back were pretty much doomed. And a bit of trivia, of the Vulcan losses one of them occurred in the U.S. A Vulcan was in Chicago, Illinois for an airshow. While taking off for a practice flight it lost power and crashed just off the end of the runway, killing all five.

When in High School would often see this amazing aircraft flying into Offutt AFB . Was a sight to see.
