My son was creeped out as a young child seeing one who overdid it at the time. Ever since, it’s been far easier to explain it as a mental illness, which it has always been and always will be.

Agreed. That’s what I was taught when I was young. My parents said that those people were mentally ill.

A “mental illness” is what causes one to make a choice, not a birth defect. These people want us to think that it is not their choice but that they “were born that way.” I can’t and will not ever agree with them.
