The move is a blow to Britain and America’s mission to wipe out Islamic State but maintain an opposition to brutal dictator Assad

Russia has sent its crack special troops into Syria to back up President Bashar al-Assad’s bid to wipe out his opposition.

Vladimir Putin’s feared Spetsnaz unit and a covert para battalion ghosted into the war-torn country and are preparing for an all-out assault on rebels fighting the regime – including moderate units such as the western-backed Free Syrian Army.

A military source said last night: “Putin’s marines are there to guard the airbases they are using against sabotage by rebels. But Spetsnaz and air-assault troops are not there to provide security to static objects, they are extremely aggressive and highly trained.

“They are there to mop up after air strikes, call in air strikes, go on extremely covert missions against rebels and ultimately wipe them out.

Spetsnaz vs US Special Forces; This is going to be Epic. No more “fighting” 19th world mouth breathers with a rusty AK who think the world is flat. And with only Russian air cover...

It’s GO TIME.

The truth is the USA/CIA/Special Forces have been running muslim terrorists in Syria for years, including ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh. This is OSINT from years back - see reporter Aaron Klein’s article.

Wonder why the US “can’t find” or eliminate ISIS despite them having miles long convoys in their brand new Toyoya SUVs - during the daytime no less?

Wonder why the US spent half a billion dollars of your money to train 4, repeat, 4 “anti” ISIS fighters who instantly handed their weapons to ISIS? Guess where the money went?

Wonder why ISIS also drives USA HUMVEES and HAS AND KNOWS HOW TO FIRE US Optical wire-guided TOWs?

Wonder no more.

The US trains ISIS in ISIL via CIA & Special Forces. They also train them in neighboring countries like Jordan. And yes, they even bring them to CONUS and train them here.

To those fools who besmirch Spetsnaz, go back and look at how the Russian REGULAR army fought in WWII. Know that Spetsnaz EXCELS at counter-jihadi ops - The Israelis are the only comparable counter-jihadi force.

Putin’s a POS as well, attacked a Christian Nation in Ukraine, crocodile tears.

But it may have an effect of voters throwing the weak Demonrats out of office.

He was head of the wars in Chechnya, wars, not war, took them 2 of them. Maybe one of his cohorts was in office but I’m sure Putin was powerful.

Russia under Putin is very different

from Russia under Yeltsin and Gorbachev.

Once Putin was in control he used a scorched earth system in Chechnya and wiped out any opposition there.

This isn't your Daddy's Spetsnaz. We are talking Alpha Group, Vega, Smerch, FSB, SBO, SOBR, Naval Special Marine Group, and the "Swat teams" of MVD, former GRU, and KGB (now FSB).

Top notch operators. Saw them when I was in. They train with our NATO operators including GSG9, GSDE, GROM, SAS, KSK, US Seals (esp. DEVGRU), CIA SAD/SOG, Delta, etc.

TOP NOTCH OPERATORS.

Surprise! The Soviets Nearly Won Afghan War

When Soviet generals shifted, in mid-1983, to a counterinsurgency strategy of scorched-earth tactics and the use of heavily armed special operations forces, their progress against the guerrillas accelerated. Over the next few years, the Soviets increased their control of Afghanistan, inflicting many casualties -- guerrilla and civilian. Had it not been for the immense support -- weapons, training, materials -- provided to the Afghan guerrillas by the United States, Saudi Arabia, China and Pakistan, Soviet troops would have achieved outright victory.

The question has to be asked, would Afghanistan had been better off today had the Soviets won, and the Islamic radicals wiped out?

Yes I am well aware that hindsight is 20/20.

Afghanistan would be ruled by a former Soviet Assad like strong man and the natives would still be restless but maybe no al-Qaeda given sanctuary as allies like the Taliban did. It would probably resemble the rest of the 'Stans now.

Before my time but in the 60s Afghanistan was destination for tourists - for hippies into Buddhism and also for hippie druggies looking to get pure heroin.

Obama lost Syria years go, the “rebels” are so compromised by extremists, that any legitimate rebellion fighers have long ago left... so you have various extremists fighting Assad... Assad is no saint, but those trying to remove him are of the ISIS ilk and are 1000 times worse.

Russia is sadly doing what should have been done in the first place when Wahabbist Fundamentalists began marching across the middle east in the 60s.
