A Marine Says: If a Shooter Shows Up, Don't Be a Victim, Attack
Radix News ^ | 10/6/2015 | Coleman Jennings

Have you ever asked yourself what you would do if you encountered a crazed shooter at your school, workplace, or a public space? Your actions in that moment could save your life, and those of others....

Let’s focus on Fight. This is the one I’ve considered for 15 years. And has been heightened by my time in the Marines. When there is no escape, you MUST fight. Charge the attacker. Throw a water bottle, binder, book, coffee, chair, desk, back pack, anything, to throw them off. Then charge them.

Dr. Ben Carson said that and the left jumped him for being “insensitive”. I hate liberals.

This is FINALLY what the AF is teaching as well. They even say, “If armed, resist”. I’m retiring in <90 days and they FINALLY give us useful advice on active shooter training.

Practice your headshots and unload some 9mm goodness on them.

The marine has it wrong. It’s much more preferable when shots are heard for the teacher to cower in the corner with the kids.

All very well saying this, but when fight or flight kicks in, the choice is usually taken away from you as your lizard brain takes over from your conscious human one. If you don’t have it naturally you need to have it trained into you, either through military training or martial arts/self defence training.

It may be a matter of personality. I told Mr. Mercat that I want to be trained and armed because I know myself and I will attack. That’s just who I am. I’m not bragging but it is a guttural reflex.

When my son was in high school a couple of years ago, the students were instructed that all of them were to sit in a corner of the room if there was a shooter on the premises. All of them! I told him to screw that. That he and the rest of the boys should stand ready to throw whatever was handy at the shooter. Their backpacks were filled with at least 20 pounds of books. That would be a good start. Additionally they could throw the chairs and desks. That would slow down any shooter. But imagine if the shooter was a student who knew that everyone would be piled into a corner - fish in a barrel. How stupid are administrators in schools?

Flee a knife; charge a gun.

Given current Air Force priorities I’m surprised they didn’t tell you to hit him with your purse.

Like Chris Norman, the Brit who helped take down the Moroccan terrorist on the French train.

“My thought was, ‘OK, I’m probably going to die anyway, so let’s go.’ I’d rather die being active, trying to get him down, than simply sit in the corner and be shot. Either you sit down and you die or you get up and you die. It was really nothing more than that.”

I always hope I’d go down swinging anyway. I’m small but I’m still quick and my plan is to go for the knees.

It’s pure common sense. At point blank range a gunman ain’t gonna miss unless you make him miss.

Be prepared. SITREP. Who’s in your zone? Avoid UNPROTECTED, feel good, “gun free” slaughter zones. Depending on proximity to the perp, flight may be the smartest course of action. Being closest in proximity, you’ll have to take the shot at the perp. Having access and time to your weapon is the ultimate. Be prepared.

Maybe they should pee themselves or crap their pants to make themselves look like uninviting targets. Didn’t we hear that about rape victims?

I’m the same way, I react first and think later. It has served me well, I’ve saved several children from drowning while fully clothed.
