Stoughton -- Gov. Scott Walker said he could appoint a new justice to the Wisconsin Supreme Court by the end of this week.
"I interviewed all three of the applicants yesterday," Walker told reporters at a high school here Thursday.
The Republican governor said he would make his decisions "probably in the next couple days because youve got oral arguments coming. I think its important for the people of the state. They want the court to be filled. They dont want a long-term vacancy on the Supreme Court."
Three people have asked Walker to put them on the state's highest court to replace Justice N. Patrick Crooks, who died last month. Applying by Friday's deadline were Appeals Judge Rebecca Bradley, Madison attorney Claude Covelli and Dane County Circuit Judge Jim Troupis.
Bradley is one of three candidates who announced she was running for Crooks' seat before he died. The other two Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Joe Donald and Appeals Judge JoAnne Kloppenburg declined to apply and said they believed it would be inappropriate for the governor to appoint someone who was running for the seat.
Bradley is backed by conservatives in next year's race for the seat. Walker appointed her to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in 2012 and the District 1 Court of Appeals this May.
Troupis was a longtime go-to attorney for Republicans and served as a lead attorney for Justice David Prosser's campaign in 2011 when there was a recount. Walker this May appointed Troupis to the Dane County bench, and Troupis said then he would not run for a full term on that court.
In an interview last week, Troupis declined to say whether he was considering running for the state Supreme Court next year. He did not return a call Monday.

Well, it sure warmed the hearts of the Trump fans when Walker quit the race. They despised him.
“I know. This is our election to lose. Democrats have not won 3 Presidential Elections in something like 70 years. I can see that trend breaking due to complete and utter stupidity of Republicans.”
I think Hillary, despite her plethora of issues, still has the inside track. This noise about her campaign being in trouble is just that.. noise. She’s not going to land in jail (sorry, but the Clintons are above the law in this country), and her fans will go nuts with admiration for her being such a “survivor.”
Appointing Bradley today at 9:15AM!!!!!
Now a 5-2 Court.
Lets get things done!
