More than half of high school American football players are at risk of long-lasting brain trauma, after suffering minor hits on the field, experts have warned.

The sport is recognised as a dangerous one. Even with the best protective gear, sprained knees, pulled muscles and the odd broken bone, are part and parcel of competing.

But, a new seven-year study has warned high school players risk potentially serious head trauma, from seemingly innocuous knocks.

I would wager a much higher percentage of high school students sustain brain trauma from common core curriculum.

Rush predicted this onslaught years ago.

Blows to the head can cause trauma in young people. When my son got whacked in the head I made him stop drinking for a couple of days.

He was traumatized.

at risk of long-lasting brain trauma . . . high school players risk potentially serious head trauma

That's a bit too heavy on weasel words for my taste. What they are saying is either "look at me, I have a study too" or "let's get of activities that involve testosterone and replace them with knitting or singing praises to Dear Leader".

I am no longer a fan of him but Joe Paterno once said something I thought was interesting. At least something to consider.

He said the main cause of concussions are the modern football helmets which the player use to batter other players. He said back in the day when they used leather helmets, there were less brain injuries.

Not sure he is right but as I said, maybe worth thinking about.

And 92% of the faculties at high schools across our nation seem to have brain damage after not playing football.

So what’s the point?

Paterno is not the only individual that was around during the Leatherhead era and have said the same things. A quick look at USMA football deaths and disabling injuries from the 20’s to WW2 seems to have most of them broken necks and backs.

I played for 3 years in the 90s. I don’t remember ever getting my bell rung. I did have my share of sprained ankles, hip pointers, shoulder injuries, etc. Never the head though.

Back before helicopter parenting and bubble-wrapped kids, we all sustained the occasional head trauma, along with cuts, bruises, broken bones, and being chased by angry property owners.

We learned about consequences and grew up to be responsible adults. Very few of us died from it.

JoePa is right.

If they want to get rid of concussions, take off the protective cage around the face. That way no one will lead with their head. You get a George Blanda single bar.

I remember Bart Starr wearing the single bar face mask. This was after they had at least gone to the double bar but not the cages you see now.

I can’t think of any of my fellow team players that ever suffered “brain trauma” other than having to shake it off after a good hit every once in awhile. This is just another B$ move to remove an American tradition so they can replace it with a European sport. I’m guessing soccer in this case. Sorry but football is too much a part of American culture to be replaced by soccer though I’m sure the homonazis would love it.

One of my son's classmates (junior in HS) has suffered brain damage from contact sports. He is not the same young man he was 2 years ago - his cognitive abilities have been degraded. Your brain is sloshing around in a bone case - a sharp rap will cause it to slam against the inside of the skull. This will damage the brain. Repeated blows make it worse, of course.

Football is not worth the price you pay to play.
