N. Korea preparing to put on one of largest-ever military parade: 38 North

2015/10/09 09:25

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 (Yonhap) -- Recent satellite imagery shows North Korea is preparing to put on one of the country's largest military parades to mark the 70th anniversary this week of the founding of its Workers' Party, a U.S. research institute said Thursday.

About 800 tents, 700 trucks and 200 armored fighting and military vehicles are amassed at Pyongyang's parade training grounds that include a replica of Kim Il-sung Square, where the actual parade takes place, the website 38 North said, citing satellite imagery taken on Tuesday.

Parade preparations began in May when troops and equipment began to arrive at the site, 38 North said.

"Throughout the facility numerous groups of troops are seen assembling and moving in formation around the practice track, passing before the replica reviewing stand," it said. "Interestingly, there are several formations of horses and riders practicing on the track of the Mirim Riding Club -- possibly in preparation for the parade."

The Oct. 10 anniversary is one of the North's biggest national holidays. Concerns had spiked earlier that the North could mark the anniversary with either a long-range rocket launch or a nuclear test, but such chances appear low now.

"While the ballistic missile launchers and long-range self-propelled guns that are the stars of North Korean military parades are not identifiable, they may be under the large temporary shelter erected on the southeast corner of the facility."

"Alternatively they could arrive a day or two before the parade as sometimes has happened in the past," it said.

Military hardware seen in the image include seven unmanned aerial vehicles on mobile launchers, some partially draped with camouflage tarps, which are used for surveillance and reconnaissance missions, 38 North said.

"Given the six-month buildup and the high level of observable activity throughout the parade training facility, it would appear that the forthcoming parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea, regardless of whether ballistic missiles are present or not, will be one of the largest in North Korea's history," it said.

A pre-emptive strike would be a better idea. After Barry arrives of course.

We can always dream about a parade accident, a kind of which occurred back in Egypt in 1981. I have to say, though, that such an attempt would be more difficult because N. Korean dignitaries will be viewing the parade way above the ground and some distance away from marching troops and other participants.

The worst country in the world... and they spend what little their money they have on military parades? It's as if they put a sign on their backs saying "Violent Thug Losers On Display"....

Yes, we get it.

North Korea can't create culture, art, industry, or beauty but they sure as hell can dirt fight. Yeah, the world's impressed - North Korea wins the award for being biggest loser.

I guess it’s better to see the Norks parading around than to actually see them using that military equipment against the Republic of Korea(South).Espechially in the delapadated state our military is under the command of the inept Muslim in chief.

Failure?

They're celebrating 70 years of Dear Leader's spectacular success following upon spectacular success. How can you not love Dear Leader? Dear Leader provides for you! Dear Leader cares for you! Dear Leader has made the Peoples Democratic Republic of Korea everything it is today!

A feast for the masses after the parade?
