Washington (CNN)—Donald Trump and Ben Carson are settling into their respective first- and second-place spots at the top of the GOP field of presidential candidates while Hillary Clinton continues to nearly double her closest rival Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary, according to a new national poll.
While Trump is maintaining his lead over the 15 other candidates for the GOP nomination with 26% of the support, Carson made his strongest showing yet in the Farleigh Dickinson University poll released Thursday with 22%. They are the only two Republican candidates to clear double digits of support.
The poll, which was conducted October 1 through October 5, came before Carson made a slew of controversial comments this week when he suggested the victims of the Oregon college shooting should have done more than "stand there and let" the gunman shoot them and said looser gun laws could have "greatly diminished" Hitler's slaughter of millions.
Carson had previously scored as much as 20% of support in an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released late last month.
Carly Fiorina, meanwhile, who surged to third place after a strong performance in the second GOP debate, has slumped to 7% from the 13% high she earned in a poll last week.

Who are Carson’s supporters?
There was a post on a blog that was examining the polling methods, and theorized that the media was over sampling what is, essentially, the church lady vote in order to give Carson a greater showing. You will notice that when the sample numbers are very high and truly randomized based on Republican voters or likely voters, that Trump’s numbers skyrocket and Carson is usually at least 10 or 15 points behind.
But to answer your question more directly: As I said, it’s the church lady vote. I’ve seen a few of them, and most of them seem to comment more about Carson’s likability and Christian values than they do actual policies. It’s an extremely low information group almost as bad as the group that’s voting for Jeb and Rubio.

Media pump and dump scheme. The media pumped her up out of thin air as a weapon to use against Trump in he last debate. It didn’t work. Now she’s forgotten. I suppose next they’ll be pumping up Graham.

I do not know who the other supporters are, but I strongly support Dr. Carson and Donald Trump. I have lived on this earth quite a while and used to be a bleeding heart liberal. Then I became a Mom and decided the future was too important to inherit my political morality. I began to seriously read history and it helped that our lives and work rubbed shoulders with people from all over the world. My crash course in political culture and economics plus real life experience taught me that America was running at break neck speed toward extinction. Degradation of public schools, the drug culture, the strong attempts to remove the basis for the wonderful freedoms of this nation which clearly came from Judeo-Christianity, the demise of the family, radical feminism and last, but not least, the rise of an abortion industry which convinced the nation that unborn babies were not really human yet are a few of the realities taking us down. Cap all that off with left wing geniuses who have given us the technology to communicate and stock the media with those who are like-minded and who worship at the alter of everything sexual and you get a glimpse of where I am coming from. Now, we have open borders which encourage an invasion of our nation, a national debt which could take us down on it’s own and a President who wants to disarm law abiding citizens just as Hitler did in Germany. We know how that ended. We need a President who will overturn the major tool the socialists and communists have used to destroy our nation which is political correctness. Dr. Carson is not afraid of those people and we know Donald Trump isn’t. Ben Carson is one of the most wise men I have come across in my lifetime and I have known 100s of them. His incredible life story, his pure logic, his incredible insight, his courage, his proven intelligence, and his ability to rise to the top of the most difficult specialty in medicine, and his fund of knowledge on almost everything he has encountered, plus his knowledge of what is going on in this world, are indescribably impressive. Anyone who cannot see that is not a person who is after reality, but rather has a nefarious goal, in my opinion. The East Coast, the West Coast and illegals may decide the next election but that will never change the fact that the people in the heart of America who live close to nature understand the laws of nature can see the corruption in government which has been allowed to develop because of career politicians and millions upon millions of people have decided they want an outsider in that oval office. I pray it will happen and I will defind Dr. Ben Carson against the evil coming at him every time I can. Very few will read this because it is so long. However, trying to condense how one feels in Twitter phrases is not possible.
I agree, speaking at conservative conferences, that’s my impression as well-—the self-identified very religious, and I think some Huckabee/Sanrorum supporters shifted over to Carson.

No idea but they are probably dumb ass low info do gooders. He looks stoned all the time, is a gun grabber, and mumbles. The only reason he’s in this is because he’s a token, and you all know what that means. We have to have PC candidates to pander like everyone else. Many people will not get out to vote for him. He has zero chance in a general.
Nothing the media has tried so far has hurt Trump. Let’s hope it stays that way. They will get more and mire desperate the closer it gets.

The more I hear from Carson- from the ‘controversial’ statements that are just facts, IMO, the more I see a man of courage behind that composed and calm demeanor.
Cruz? No way the MSM will pump him up. He’s a real conservative. He was pretty much shut out of the last debate- given few questions, cut off short when he did get to answer, and ignored when he tried to interject something.
Trump and Carson are the ones I support. I prefer Carson first, then Trump.
Dr Carson is indeed a remarkable man. However he is fatally flawed as a Presidential Candidate.
