I’m thinking that after the siege of Vienna in the 16th Century, the Ottoman’s had annexed the entire central part of Hungary but my memory might be weak here.
Except for a corner of what was once part of Yugoslavia, Islam had a remarkably small foothold in Europe after the Spanish threw the Jews and Moors out of Spain in the 15th Century.
Islam had been almost wiped out starting in the 13th Century, with the advent of Genghis Khan and his Golden Horde on the center of the Islam at the time, Baghdad, sacking and looting that city and turning it into the hellhole it still was in the dawn of the 21st Century. The Golden Horde attacked the Muslim caliphate with even greater ferocity than even the jihadists themselves, and reduced them to only a very small remnant of what they once were.
But they regrew and established the Ottoman Empire, though they were much more circumspect than they had been centuries earlier. Still, that undercurrent of domination still coursed in their theology, biding their time.
