Gun control advocates are launching a new regulatory push in California to impose first-in-the-nation instant background checks for ammunition sales, a move that comes as gun violence surfaces as a lightning rod issue in the 2016 presidential race.
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democratic candidate for governor in 2018, joined with the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence in announcing the initiative last week.

It would require owners to turn in "large-capacity" magazines -- those holding 11 rounds or more -- and report when their weapons are stolen.

Aside from the ammo background checks, the California proposal also would require felons to relinquish weapons,

We are? All of us?
FR is based in California.
More Californians financially support FR than
from any other place and there are more Cali
FReepers than from any other state.
Why spend any time among all of us wimps?
Of the almost 58,000 Americans killed in Vietnam almost 10% were Californians.
This state has enormous problems but make untrue
blanket statements and expect some pushback.
Maybe that will clear the welfare roles?
These idiots will keep these fascists in office until they’re enslaved.
I just see what Jerry Brown is doing to the state. I just see what the idiots who are running SF are doing. It’s what I see and hear on the front. I do not know what is happening in the background since it’s not reported. How are we to know that? You can’t blame folks who just see the store front without knowing what’s being sold inside. Thanks.
Yeah, I know... But the weather!
Not that this is duplicative but, arent felons already barred from owning or even touching a gun?
Not just firearms - ammo is the same as a firearm for a felon.
I have several (conservative) friends from California and I am always asking them about the state retirement system because the CA pols seem as anxious as the government in Illinios or Detroit to loot the pension funds.
They all say it is doing well, but I don’t understand how. Retired civil servants making over 100k and a state that spends money like crazy does not compute. In my humble opinion it is only a matter of time before the rats there (or the rats in DC) loot the pension funds to party on.
I like what our local sheriff here in the Ozark Mountains said: “Feds try that crap and I’ll just deputized every law abiding citizen so they will be exempt”!
Exactly right. Those two papers serve the areas that control the state politically. The rest of the state essentially has no voice and sucks hind teat.
The Calif equivalent of the NYT. Convince NYC and the rest of NY state can just suck it, or so I have been told.
So you believe everything the MSM has to say?
Is it even logical to assume we are ALL one
thing? I belong to a 200 member sports shooting
club (which includes Gen Chuck Yeager) in my small,
rural town. We have 3 trap range bunkers with
voice activated launchers. We have an outdoor rifle
and pistol range and a five star archery range and
a clubhouse with meeting room, kitchen, and full
service bar. Nine months out of the year specially
trained members teach 4H kids how to safely handle
firearms on our ranges. One Saturday per month
wimpy local parents send up to 130 of their kids
to learn gun safety.
And,yes, I am talking about Californians.
Criminals will drive to Arizona or Nevada and bring ammo back by the case. It will be sold on street corners like crack. Ammo sales will just become another lucrative way for bad guys to make money.
“It is time for California to water the Tree of Liberty.”
I think they’d rather water the Weed of Cannabis! /s;)
This ranks right up there with Mary Matalin and Serpenthead.
I can almost feel the pain of our conservative brothers and sisters in Cali.
The state is beautiful. The politicians are rotten to the core and as wrongheaded as they can possibly be.
That’s what happens with a liberal/socialist/Mexican/communist majority. They WILL run it into the ground and then we free people will step in and make changes to prevent any of these kind of freeloading pols and and people from being able to take advantage again.
The first thing is a purge of all sanctuary cities. Jail and deport. Of course by then the border will be secure so they can’t just come back... ever. Anchor baby loophole... gone.
Welfare... drug tests and mandatory work. Unemployment... closer scrutiny. After all it is one program the workers do pay into unlike welfare.
Well, you get the idea, so no sense beating the horse about it.
I see Cali as what the rest of the country will become unless we fight back hard to stop it and change it back to what it is supposed to be.
It will be a culling and only those who believe in America and the American dream will be allowed to stay. The rest can go to wherever they think their country is.
Lastly; no more hyphenated people. One word; American. You are either American or you are a ...-American in which case you go to the country preceding the hyphen. Period. The time for this nonsense is over.
Well said.
“a move that comes as gun violence surfaces as a lightning rod issue”
I believe the actual lightening rod issue is confiscating guns in mass from lawful owners in violation of our 2nd Amendment rights, leaving us defenseless from the growing drug cartels and drug gangs in our country, who of course will never give up THEIR guns!
being in the same room or house.
They’re also exempt from any registration schemes due to 5th Amendment protections.
Anyone bootlegging ammo under that scenario would be a good guy.
I think thats the point and why californians will lose their rights completely a bit at a time. LIberals understand the new proposals are just a step along the way to complete loss of freedom. The problem liberals have w/ guns is that you can have them too.
That said we’ve seen what liberals will do when a class of people can’t defend themselves. They murder them enmass...which is another word for genocide. Its happening right here right now.
