TORONTO (AP) -- With a host of policies that differ dramatically from his predecessor, Justin Trudeau's victory over the most conservative leader in Canada's history will reverberate beyond the country's borders.
The first major shift came Tuesday when Trudeau announced he had spoken with President Barack Obama and told him he will remove Canada's six fighter jets from the U.S.-led bombing campaign against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
Among the other areas in which Trudeau differs from Conservative Stephen Harper: climate change, immigration and whether relations with the U.S. should hinge on the future of the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
Speaking at a rally in Ottawa, the 43-year-old Trudeau - son of one of the country's most dynamic politicians - underlined the sea change.
"I want to say this to this country's friends around the world: Many of you have worried that Canada has lost its compassionate and constructive voice in the world over the past 10 years. Well, I have a simple message for you on behalf of 35 million Canadians. We're back," he declared.
With Trudeau's decisive victory on Monday, Canadian voters reclaimed their country's liberal identity, giving the new prime minister a commanding majority in parliament that will allow him to govern without relying on other parties.
That means change in Canadian policies on a broad spectrum of issues.
"Trudeau will return Canada to its traditional approach in foreign affairs which is characteristic of every single government but Harper's," said Robert Bothwell, a professor at the University of Toronto. "Canada will go back to multilateralism, back to strong support for the United Nations."

Poor Canada....some thought they learned their lesson. Hope and (climate) Change.
Well for one — we can forget about the Keystone Pipeline ever being implemented EVEN if a Keystone friendly US agrees to it now.
Looks like Canada is going Socialist too!
Not a word from AP about Trudeau being way left of center? As if thats not THE distinguishing characteristic of this clown.
CanaDUH.........or in a Homer Simpsonism— CanaDOH!-—
Fell for all the media hate, they did.
Many of my own friends and family drank this poison.
God help us. One “royal family” is enough.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a gun confiscation came to Canada with this bunch of communists.
I wonder how long his government will last. I would not be surpriced if a call for new elections will occur after the incompetence in Ottawa becomes very evident.
The last time Canada tried basic gun control, registration, it didnt work out too well.
Massive non compliance like is being seen in CT and NY. The Canadian Government quickly backed off and then quietly killed the thing.
I’d expect the same results this time around, if Trudeau is up for trying it.
“Canada will go back to multilateralism, back to strong support for the United Nations.
In other words, Trudeau will tell Bibi and Israel to pound sand. The days of Canada being a strong supporter of Israel ended with Harper’s defeat on Monday.
“Obama’s got a buddy north of the border!”
His daddy - Pierre - was one, like Obama, who never met a Communist he didn’t like. He would always lean to the left side of any issue.
When the US invaded Grenada many moons ago, Pierre Trudeau was the only leader of supposedly friendly-to-the-US nations who was not informed in advance of the invasion. Rumor was they were afraid that Trudeau couldn’t be trusted with the info.
D’oh Canada....
The Canadian media will do everything in their power to defend their new King.
Rome.
The Nazi Reich.
The Soviet Empire.
Soon, socialism.
I fear Pajama Boy has been resurrected north of the border.
One of the difficulties of international relations is that different nations are on differing time schedules. Canada has overthrown its Bush (Harper) and is about to get its Obama (Trudeau the Younger), at the time that we are about to dispose of our Obama, and Britain is still in its “Bush” years with its somewhat-conservative Cameron but will someday get its “Obama” in Corbyn, while Japan has already gone “post-Obama” when it replaced Hatoyama with Shinzo Abe (which gives us a hint at what post-Obama America will be like, but that is a subject for another time).
All the while, we have to pray, both literally and figuratively, that Putin and Xi’s respective economies collapse underneath them before they get the chance to succeed in their respective hegemonic efforts.
Americans hate you.
But Canada?
Canada loves them some mooslimes...go to Canada.
Canada loves them “refugees”.
CANADA IS OPEN FOR YOU.
Remember America is a racist, Islamaphopic, cartoon making nation that hates you.
Canada loves you...GO TO CANADA!
Can't blame me for trying. :-)
Canadian dollar is dumping....look for massive money movement to Ireland. Maybe some in US real estate...most likely Florida.
The Canadian Left is crowing about the “active role played by NGO’s” in the defeat of Harper.
Taking Harper down was at the top of George Soros’ To-Do List. Apparently he was successful and is now taking a victory lap.
Please God, RID US OF GEORGE SOROS.
Satan has his hand of protection upon Soros.
