Qatar says it could intervene militarily in Syria

Qatar, a major supporter of rebels in Syria’s civil war, suggested it could intervene militarily following Russia’s intervention in support of President Bashar al-Assad but said it still preferred a political solution to the crisis.

The comments by Qatar’s foreign minister, made in a CNN interview on Wednesday, drew a swift reply from Assad’s government with a senior official warning that Damascus would respond harshly to such “direct aggression”.

Gulf Arab backers of Syrian rebels such as Qatar have been unsettled by Russia’s three-week-old air strike campaign that has allowed Assad’s forces to wrest back some territory to help secure his strongholds in western Syria.

Qatar has been a leading supporter of anti-Assad rebel groups, providing arms and financial and political backing

Your theory makes a lot of sense. Now carry it out further. Where has all the new natgas been found? In the southeastern Med, off the coast of Israel, Syria, Egypt, Cyprus. Israel and Cyprus are going online with the first well next year I think. So rather convenient that the Russians who as you know are basically the sole provider of gas to Europe at this moment show up to defend their warm water port. We basically gave Syria to them! We had no defensive measures in place, and we had already ostracized ourselves by supporting the “overthrow assad forces” (who are also probably ISIS but if not we are in no place to refute it if the Russian say they are), and even if we tried to reassure Assad we could not be trusted by Assad after Qaddafi fell. Assad had no choice and really I am surprised he held out this long.

This president of ours has really made a mess. We spent decades and fortunes to bring the entire hemisphere under western influence in the post war era, and with Sadat we finally did. How did Obama get outplayed in, like a weekend? Either his moronic view of “unilateralism” and he was duped, or he was plain not watching his flank but after Iraq and Libya you would think he would have learned to try to defend some modicum of political stability.

What choice have we given them. As I wrote above, we’ve been duplicitous and weak kneed and here is the worst of all the rubs so many people at foggy bottom could not wait until we turned on Israel but now do they see what the consequences will be if we do ... if we turn on Israel now after all this time what is our word going to be worth to any Arab ruler or sheikh? They will not see it as a gesture of goodwill but only as self-serving and as firm as the Saharan topsoil.

Candidate Clinton deserves to have her face rubbed in this mess for the entire election. This is her albatross, she has to wear it. That the Democrats would select her is pure folly but then I look at the GOP slate and fear for mankind.

Well it should be obvious that Qatar should be allowed to choose who runs Syria. Qatar, that bastion of freedom.

“Land mass isn’t that important in projecting “power” outside your borders.”

True, but they are like Saudis, incredibly lazy and paying foreigners, and having slaves to do their work. They cannot raise a military that coulld fight its way out of a wet paper bag.

I don’t think there is a shortage in those that would accept their funds for the work.

What’s going to happen to it? The US has a huge military presence in the country. We would never let our Wahhabi allies lose power.
