Also in Jerusalem today, my wife while hitching a ride was accused of being a terrorist.

Here, "hitching a ride" would mean standing by the side of the road with one's thumb out hoping to be picked up. What does it mean there, riding the bus or perhaps hailing a cab?

Either way, it sounds just frightful!

Same thing as in America. It’s a very common way to travel here.
