Lucas has as much as admitted that he was trying to capture the spirit of the old Flash/Buch Rogers movies, and not trying to make a "2001" or a "Fantastic Voyage".

I heard somewhere he originally wanted to remake Flash Gordon but was unable to obtain the rights.
