Not always a hydrocarbon. That’s a Class A or Class B fire. Class D fires are burning metals like Aluminum and Magnesium.

I have one of these; and I did NOT know this-->  Once ignited, it is difficult to extinguish, being able to burn in nitrogen (forming magnesium nitride), carbon dioxide (forming magnesium oxide, and carbon) and water (forming magnesium oxide and hydrogen).   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium
