Egypt: Russian plane crashes with over 200 passengers in Isis stronghold in Sinai

A Russian civilian aircraft crashed moments after it went missing in Egypt's Sinai region on Saturday.

There were said to be 217 passengers and seven crew members on board when Egypt's air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft, according to reports.

Egyptian prime minister Sherif Ismail has confirmed that the Russian plane crashed near Nekhel in the north of Sinai, and has set up a cabinet level crisis committee to investigate, according to AFP

The Russian airline Kogalymavia flight was on its way to Russia after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh resort on the Red Sea. Most people on the plane were Russian tourists, and there were at least 17 children on board.

Russia's RIA news agency has now reported that the plane developed technical problems and the pilot had sought to make an emergency landing in Cairo.

According to reports, the plane crashed in a mountainous area.

"Military planes have discovered the wreckage of the plane... in a mountainous area, and 45 ambulances have been directed to the site to evacuate dead and wounded," the Egyptian cabinet said in a statement.

Local media had reported that the plane has crashed, while other news agencies were citing Egyptian officials saying that the plane had left the national airspace safely.

The Sinai Peninsula region in Egypt has been restive for the past several months, with increasing Isis attacks reported in the area.

Russia began conducting airstrikes against Isis targets in Syria on 30 September.

If it is a Technical error Airbus has a problem. Highly unusual for modern aircraft to fall out of the sky from cruising altitude in straight and level flight without external forces at play.

Also very coincidental a Russian Airbus just happens to have a malfunction over hostile territory in straight and level flight. I don’t buy the malfunction angle.

Could be another case of suicide by jet airline, similar to the Germanwings crash, or the Egypt Air crash in the late 90s.

There is also the quality of maintenance. Russian airplanes fall down all the time.

The flight profile and the stated actions of the pilots don’t line up. If you declare an emergency you reduce speed and descend to your preferred emergency airport. You don’t pull sharply nose up then sharply nose down. If it was something technical it happened very very quickly.

You can’t overlook the possibility that someone smuggled an explosive (a la Lockerbie) on board, especially given the origin of the flight.

This “Russian” aircraft was an Airbus A-321. It was flying at an altitude of 32,000 feet when the trouble started, well above the range of any manpad.

If it was ISIS, Russia is going to be galatically PO’d at them.

Not unlike past problems with fly-by-wire aircraft. Computer failure leads to uncontrolled movement of control surfaces, a stall and a crash. This aircraft seems to have broke up in flight perhaps due to overstress caused by aircraft movement way outside the safety envelope.

Russian airplanes fall down all the time.

Bullshit. Aircraft of all nations crash. There is a long history. You want a list?

This looks like (IMO) more of a bombing than a shoot down or technical issue. Bombing followed by partial break-up, followed by rapid descent and crash. There’s another thread up and running on FR that states authorities have made it to the crash site and the fuselage is in at least 2 pieces. It also stated the CVR and FDR have been recovered.

Saudi Arabia better hope it’s not ISIS.

Russia will hold Saudi Arabia accountable if it turns out it was ISIS.

Looks like the flight path was along the edge of SA. But how could SA be responsible?

From hints of data released sounds like barometric bomb placed in tail or centerline baggage area

Emergency squawk could have been triggered by cabin decompression at 33k feet, pilots radio technical failure, plane started descent, broke up burning at 28k feet, fuselage minus wings descended vertically into desert with 150 bodies inside, other bodies reported within 3 mile radius suggesting they were sucked or blown out of the aircraft
IS of Egyot quick to claim responsibility.... Tbd Bomb works best if they want to get a specific aircraft and down it over a specific setting .... Russians sending assets to Egypt Imo, The perps will be discovered and dealt with FF? Stand by

Breaking: ISIS affiliate in Egypt claims they shot it down, revenge for Russian airstrikes.

Revising: The wording of the ISIS claim is vague enough to indicate the possibility of a bomb on board.
