Paul Ryan on speakership: "I'm redesigning this job"
CBS -- Face the Nation ^ | 11-1-15 | Rebecca Shabad

Newly-elected Speaker Paul Ryan said in an interview that aired Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation" that he's "redesigning" his leadership job.

"I'm redesigning this job. I don't think it can work going forward like it's worked in the past. I can't pick up where John (Boehner) left off. It has to be done differently," Ryan said, referring to Rep. John Boehner's, R-Ohio, recently ended tenure as speaker.

The House elected Ryan as speaker last Thursday and Boehner resigned from his leadership post and congressional seat.

Ryan told host John Dickerson that he wasn't elected "dictator of the House" and has plans to implement a bottom up approach that House conservatives have lobbied for.

During the interview, the new speaker laid out his priorities to return to "regular order" and pass legislation using the committee process, seek common ground with other lawmakers, serve as a check on the Obama administration's power and to present bold policy proposals.

Ryan appeared to rule out passing an bipartisan immigration reform bill under President Obama.

"Look, I think it would be a ridiculous notion to try and work on an issue like this with a president we simply cannot trust on this issue," Ryan said. "He tried to go it alone, circumventing the legislative process with his executive orders so that is not in the cards. I think if we reach consensus on how best to achieve border and interior enforcement security, I think that's fine."

But then Ryan said Republicans need to take "policy risks" and named tax reform as one option and an ObamaCare replacement plan as another.

Ryan was elected after weeks of internal turmoil within the House Republican conference. He told Face the Nation, however, that the infighting was "necessary to unify our conference, unify our party."

And he's still planning on sleeping in his office in DC. It's "convenient."

If this is more than words -- his professed desire to check Obama -- I will be satisfied.

I need to see some wood before I call it a tree.

Let’s all see what he’s going to do. He’s come up with both good and bad plans in the past — most of them good — so let’s see what he will implement.

Why must there now be an Obamacare “replacement” instead of a flat-out repeal? Socialist b@stards.

Because “repeal” leaves the country with NO health system besides cash on the barrel head. Most of the health insurers have already gone out of business.

why? Because the liberals and the media have decided that the old status quo was unacceptable. Tens of millions uninsured and all that; we can’t go back to that, say the liberals.

This issue is a good example where the liberals and the media are setting the terms of the debate; setting up the parameters of what should happen. They have decided that we can’t just repeal Obamacare and start over. Instead, if anything happens, it needs to enhance or deal with aspects of healthcare which Obamacare didn’t adequately address.

The unanswered question here is, how could there be any problems with Obamacare, when the big Dem. majority in both houses of Congress at the time rammed this through? In their wisdom, did they create a program with flaws?? Good Democrats passed legislation which caused unforeseen consequences???/ Nancy P. is this true????? Say it ain’t so......

Ambiguously worded. What consensus and with who? I don't trust that he won't do a deal with Obama and a GOPe and Rat coalition

Sounds like he’s getting ready to work with President Trump. He knows he can’t get away with sucking eggs like Boner did when Pres. Trump hits town, so he’d might just as well start to straighten up and fly right, right now.

As a business owner, I know that the old system didn’t work either. My desire to provide at a minimum, a catastrophic health care plan to my employees was killing us a year at a time. Unfortunately, there are a group of people in this country that are basically “uninsurable” due to their preexisting conditions and high cost of treatment. They need to be included in a pool that is subsidized in some way so as to take their costs out of the larger, general pool to reduce costs for the rest of us. I disagree with the idea of “mandatory” participation, but the reduced number of companies offering affordable basic plans has made the liberal goal of single payer less and less avoidable for the self employed unemployed. Essentially making them a high risk group similar to drivers that are uninsurable due to multiple high costs claims and DUI, etc.
